Funniest scene?

I am curious which scenes in this movie that everyone else thinks are the funniest?

My first choice is in the coffee room, when the soccer (football) coach and other teachers watch Gregory cross the green in a totally random fashion. It got even funnier as years went by and I watched my own teen-aged son do the same thing!

My second choice is when Carol is leading Gregory to Susan in a very roundabout way. Greogory's reaction to her changing attire in the phone booth was hilarious.

Next was the "Penguin" scene. Fans of this movie will know what I'm talking about.

Next is a toss-up between:
a)Gregory and the Italian language teacher (When asked if he knows any Italian, Gergory responds with "bella" and ... "bella") and
b)Andy watching Dorothy from the sideline: "Nine losses in a row and what do they do? Sack the goalie and put a girl on the forward line."

That's my top five. Any other opinions?

There are just too many so to make it easy i will agree with you though i must admit i like the bit when his driving teacher dad nearly runs him over then they have a conversation which includes "i was talking to you mother...you remember your mother?" to which gregory replies in a high pitched voice "off course i remember mum!"

reply

Gregory walking the ball back to Dorothy, after she shoots on him. He's wiping it off and talking gibberish, and she's not even interested in what he's saying.

reply

Hahaha. Yeah! The dad "instructing" the driver was hilarious.

I like some of the dialogue, esp. from Gregory:

Gregory: "I'm in love. I feel restless. I bet I don't get any sleep tonight."
Steve: "It's probably just indigestion."

Gregory to Steve: "Food, food, food! Is that all ye think about?!" *takes a huge bite out of a pastry*

Do The Mussolini! Headkick!

reply

I love that scene too! In Gregory's dubbed accent it comes out sounding like "fud, fud, fud."

How about the scene where the headmaster is playing the piano during his lunch break and the little boys are staring at him and he chases them away?

reply

Better is when the headmaster is buying pastries from Steve, or when he's inquiring the coach about the girl on the team. The coach's reply to his concerns about the shower situation: "She'll bring her own soap!" Hahaha.

Now that you mention that scene, I VIVIDLY remeber seeing and hearing that, the very first time I saw "Gregory's Girl." I know it came out YEARS later, but that dialog reminds me of the shower scene in "Starship Troopers."

reply

Love the way when Gregory is berating Steve for only ever thinking about food, that Steve comes away with his genuinely hurt retort:

"hours and hours i spend making you lovely lovely things!"

reply

I think Andy and his 'Well known facts' deserves a mention! As does his and his silent friend's pathetic attempts to find a girlfriend in Caracas!

reply

You are right! What a hoot!! Speaking of Andy's silent friend (Charlie?), he finally does speak near the end of the film, when he's fed up with those on-going "well known facts." Almost like Marcel Marceau uttering the only spoken words in Mel Brooks' film "Silent Movie."

reply

Charlie: It's spelled wrong, you know.
Andy: What?
Charlie: Caracas. It's spelled c-a-s. You've spelled it c-u-s.
Andy: We've been standing here for four hours! Why didn't you tell me?
Glasgow's version of Marcel Marceau!

I also loved the wee boy who kept popping up saying that the ravioli and the football were 'Garbeeg', who was then found to be part of Steve's covert cake selling operation in the pi** stained lavies! Another classic cameo!

Any more homages to great films then within Greory's Girl?

Did anyone pick up on the scene in the cooking class, when Gregory and Steve are in conversation? Susan comes over and asks for advice on her batter. Steve shows her how to stir it, and sends her on her way with a pat on the bum. She walks away with a floured hand print on her bottom?

Or how about in the park when Gregory and Susan are discussing how everone is obsessed by numbers? The photographer and his pint-sized mini-me mimic come along, discussing exposure times: "How many elephants would that take?"

reply

I for some reason really laugh when the window cleaner boy (forgotten his name!) says about asking the woman for some hot water and one of Gregory's friends says "I don't get it" hahahaha

The kid's disastrous attempts at the high jump.
Gregory nearly being run over by the learner driver.
The slimy guy who interviews Dorothy in the dressing room.

reply

Oh and also the way Andy reads Shakespeare in the classroom.
The ravioli.

One of my favourite scenes is Gregory's outrage at the wee boy that comes to the house looking for Madelaine; when he accuses him of 'seducing young girls' and taking 'underage walks' - hilarious!!

reply

That was funny, I don't whether he was being overprotective or just wanted to vent his anger at someone.

Gregory's outrage at all the boys (including the opposite team) overzealously congratulating Dorothy was pretty funny and the argument with Steve was good.

I've just finished watching this again and the scene that made me laugh out loud the most this time was the scrawny kid who also tried out at the football trials attempting the high jump the first time. It's just the complete lack of any attempt to actually clear the bar and just clatters right into it! It's so ridiculous and so visually hilarious!

...and Chic Murray's furtive glance behind him before he tucks into the cakes the cookery class have been making on the side.

Gregory's Dad, Gregory, and Mr. Clark......my name's Anderson and the Driving Lesson
Any scene with Madeline, Kelvin, Richard, or Eric's Mini Me sidekick---what a group of little scene stealers that little girl and those little guys were!
Carol and Gregory and the phone box. Especially as they walk away, and you see how tiny she is, and how tall he is--2 inch heels on and she STILL only comes up to his shoulders. HAHAHA! I'm about as short as Carol was, maybe a bit taller, and I had nearly that same damn outfit around the same time the film was released in the USA-I was 12/13 when it was made, and 14/15 when it came to the US.
The teachers and football/soccer coach watching Gregory walk to school.
That tiny wee little girl who says "Hello, Gregory!" in an equally tiny wee voice as he steps out the door for school. The whole scene of him making his way carefully through the babies, toddlers, and preschool children so as not to squash one is hilarious, actually. Shows what a nice kid he is.

I love the scene where Gregory has just let a goal in during the match and returns the ball to Dorothy and the scene cuts to the two boys standing behind the games teacher and one of them says 'What a prick'

That scene gets me everytime.

I also like the beginning where the boys are watching the nurse stripping and Andy faints and after they pick him up, he begins to waffle 'we can come back tomorrow night and bring some chicken sandwiches'

The scene on the bridge where Andy tells Gregory that he wants to stay on the bridge as he likes looking at the big trucks. Gregorys facial expression is priceless!

The high jump scenes with the lanky kid in the red and blue sports shirt make me laugh as well.

There was so much subtle visual humour in the film

It's not really the funniest bit but I only noticed it the last time I watched the film. I've watched it dozens of times before.

When Gregory leaves his house for the first time and the pathway behind his house is littered with toddlers (this is exaggerated but typical of New Towns). One of them is clinging to the top of a spindly tree that couldn't possibly support his weight. I like the idea that the film makers must have put some effort into something that has nothing to do with the plot and that only a tiny proportion of the audience would notice.

😂 Haha - total standout moment for me. Very amusing visual gag.

Also liked the two lads playing chess in the background as Gregory enters the boys toilets. One of them is smoking a pipe!

reply

I laughed out loud several times, but the funniest scene was with the driving instructor (dad). Several funny lines in that scene, and the way the learner driver keeps swerving as if to purposely hit Gregory is hilarious.

Or how about Gregory's rant after Dorothy was interviewed by those other students?

"Arrividerci Gordon, hurry back!" scene..

reply

Best bit: Susan asking a thoroughly confused Gregory what he's up to after Margo has delivered him to her. The gurning wordless response from Gregory is priceless. Then he does it again when she aks if she would like to go for a walk with her. "Would you like to sit down over there and think about it Gregory?" "Oh....OK..thanks."

Best Lines:

"Don't touch the ravioli....it's garbage"

"That's the future. There won't be men and women in the future. Just wankers."

2 scenes from the football pitch..Gregory the clueless Goalie in Goal letting the ball in,and Andy, the ousted Goalie behind the net still hits the dirt to catch it..
Dorothy Scores a Goal, and the entire team mob her in congratulation..and then the OTHER team do the same!

If Book was in Intelligence B4 finding God,does that mean He's a Shepherd Spy? (Thank You,Spike..)

All of these are great, there are so many.

For the little touches, I like ones like the scene where Gregory has first started kissing Susan on the doorstep before going in. Susan tells him, "This time don't kiss me like I was your Auntie". So Gregory puts some real emotion/effort into it.

Then says, "What's my Auntie going to say!"

reply

Whe I was a kid, my favourite line was when Gergory orders a coffee in the cafe/diner.

Waitress : Black or White?
Gregory : Eh(?)..brown.

Was back home recently and took some photos of some of the locations. Should post them sometime soon.

Pictures? Can't wait! Looking forward!!
