I actually thought this was a very good movie (of course, I never did read the book). I first saw this movie in 1981 when I was 12 or 13 (back in the days when they didn’t ask for ID’s to get into movies). Needless to say it scared the you know what out of me. The next time I remember seeing it was when I was a senior in college in the fall of 1990. My roommate and I wanted to rent “Halloween” to watch on Halloween, but all copies were checked out, so we rented this one instead. I was just as scared watching it then as I was the first time I saw it (and just as scared as she was … that was the first time she had seen it).

If you had read the book first, the film is a huge letdown. The book is much better, and far scarier.

I can't see people being scared by the film....it's far too tepid.

There are things I like about it, the more I think about it, especially Krige's performance. However, it was poorly written and directed. It's too bad all of the footage that was shot isn't available so it could be re-edited to be a tighter, more coherent film, and a better music score could be composed.

It wasn't bad at all.

Wow! This is an old thread! This movie was great. I didn't much care for it back in 1981 because I was into slasher movies. Ghost Story was too slow for me back then. 40 years later I have a new appreciation for this movie. Great acting and atmosphere!! Not to mention the story is creepy as hell!

I liked it. Lovely snowy cinematography.

No, I just saw it a couple of months ago it's obviously quite dated but I appreciate the above average production and letting the older actors take precedence over the young actors for once.
