Italian DVD is cropped!

I managed to get my hands on the Region 2 PAL Italian DVD.

I chose it over the British 4:3 version since it is widescreen.
To my disappointment, they made it widescreen by cropping (ie. cutting the top and bottom of the picture)from the 4:3 version.

I'm sick of these stupid 'widescreen' releases that are inferior to 4:3 versions. It happens too many times nowadays.
I guess 4:3 version is already cropped from the original theatrical release and they cropped again the already cropped version. Think of the loss!

I hope the US release (if ever happens) keep the original theatrical release aspects, or at least go 4:3 if they cannot find the original theatrical release.

Thanks for the info.
It's good to know that the 4:3 version is full picture, and the Italian DVD is the same as the theatrical release, with possibly best picture quality avaiable.

I understand your point. The same happened with Terminator 3.
The cropping from 4:3 may be OK with movies, if that's what was intended for theatrical release.

Still, it becomes problem with old TV shows when they crop them even though the originally intended format is 4:3.

Didn't even think about the aspect ratio, but I have learned alot from these postings.

And now I have a better idea on what to look for when buying DVD's.

I bought the British DVD because I heard the Italian DVD had non-removable subtitles, Is this true?

I had no problem with turning the subtitle off, playing it with PowerDVD on my laptop.

I have no idea what happens with other players, though.
