I haven't seen this movie in so many years, I'm hoping someone would clarify something for me.
About the worm rape scene, all I remember is that the woman gets grabbed and her clothes sucked off. Then the next thing I remember was her lying naked on the ground. Was she dead? How did the worm alien kill her?
The impression I've always had is that Dameia (Taffe O'Connell) dies of a heart attack. However, the popular opinion is that the maggot either bares it's weight down on her or squezes her so tightly, that she suffocates.
(SPOILER ALERT) Later, the crew returns to the entrance of the cave and find her dead. Baelon (Zalmon King) pulls out his laser rifle and incinerates the body. Personally, I've always wondered about this part; Dameia has no visible injuries, and Baelon simply looks at her and decides she's dead. Was she really dead, or could she have simply been unconsious?
Then again, when watching a grade B Sci-Fi/Horror flick from the early Eighties, it always helps to turn your brain off.
Normal is what people are until you get to know them
The official word is that the worm rapes her to an orgasm that is so intense she has a heart attack. Plus what they couldn't show in the movie was the worm's orgasm into her. I know this is gross, but supposedly it was filling her up with so much so quickly that her body couldn't handle it. Clear up until the end of the scene its still raping her as she dies. The scene ends with the last thrust of the worm into her. The scene had to be toned down for many reasons. The MPAA had threatened an X rating. Taafee herself did not want to do full nudity, which is one of the reasons she is rolled over on her side when the rest of the crew find her. I read in an article several years ago when this movie came out that they wanted to build a prosthetic of Taafee's body to show what I described above, but she said no, plus again pushing towards X. And there are shots in the released version where you should see more than you actually do, again trying to avoid an X rating. I have personally seen unedited cuts of this scene, most of which are not in the released version. All of them had to do with the actual intercourse of the rape that had to be cut out because they were too graphic or considered too intense for an R rating.
Sorry its taken so long to answer your questions, but I haven't had much time to be on the net lately. It took 3 men to operate the maggot,BTW. I never read any articles about additional footage. In any movie there are takes and cuts that are not used. A good example for this movie that anyone can see is on the remake of "Not of This Earth" with Traci Lords. During the credits, there are montages from various Corman productions and part of the rape scene is in it. None of it had been darkened. When the worm first lifts her up, her lower body is positioned differently then in the actual movie. That was a different take. How I saw most of the unedited clips was in a FX workshop that was given in the mid 80's by various names in the business. My roommate in college was a film production major so he invited me to go with him, as I have an interest in effects and did some for his homebrew movies when we were in school. The Skotek? brothers were part of this workshop and had clips from many films they had worked on including GOT. The magazine I read was called Monstrous Mayhem which dealt almost exclusively with the exploitative elements of the late 70's to early 80s. Since it wasn't a mainstream magazine, it would go more into the adult elements moreso the say Starlog or Famous Monsters. Taaffee herself stated in an interview with Femme Fatale magazine that she did not want to do full nudity and that her, her agent and Corman went back and forth on it. Also in that workshop, the FX guys talked about some of the things I mentioned and how they had to get around certain problems. I hope this answered your questions.
hey man thanks alot for all this information!!! i have not seen this movie yet but ive been trying to get my hands on it after seeing the beginning of not of this earth i thought it would be in the movie and i was very excited about all of the aliens... and you guessed it!! all of the clips were from different movies actually... hey but i was wondring do you think you can tell me all of the other clips and where they are from, all that i know is that they are from other corman movies, thanks for your help
The opening credits of Not of this Earth, as well as the rest of the movie is heavily padded with sample clips from Battle Beyond the Stars, Battle Beyond the Sun, Forbidden World, Galaxy of Terror, and Humanoids from the Deep, as well as a couple others I didn't recognize (not to mention, I lost count at a certain point).
The brief snippet of Taaffe O'Connell's encounter with an over-amorous maggot during the opening credits was how I found out about GOT. It is a pretty cool montage.
Normal is what people are until you get to know them
so you know what those two aliens eating or fighting are from? cuz im pretty sure they were watching that scene int he movie terrorvision on the tv in the movie but im not sure what its from
Thanks for all the info felgrimdark!!! It would be awesome to see those unedited shots but they are probably so lost over the years. Would you be able to describe any of the other shots or positioning in the scene that were not used to give us an idea of what they had to cut or what they were not able to get away with? That would be awesome if you could. Too bad this wasn't done today as with all the stuff saved for DVD extras plus the piracy. We'd definatley see the footage for sure or perhaps and unrated, uncensored cut. I bet some of the effects guys or crew do have that footage saved.
The scene is so vague. I have heard so many things over the years of the creature actually penetrating her with a large member to it just rubbing her crotch against its body and large tentacles. The slamming motion from that along with all the slime, caused her the intense orgasm that did her in. I believe it did penetrate her but the scene flow is broken up by the scene where you see her side leg and ass. No way it could have something in her at that point. Plus in the scenes before she is on her back, you don't see any type of appendage on the creature, just its flat belly. The large member thing could work for killing her because I have read about sickos on the net who got caught screwing chickens or small dogs and the animals are usually dead from it. One thing for sure, the attack was totally sexual!!
I do have 2 copies of the actual script, Grace's and Jack Blessing's copies. In the original shooting script, the scene was never read as sexual nor is rape mentioned. It did say her uniform got ripped and she fought hard against the maggot's many legs. The scene that got the real sexual treatment was the one with Erin Moran. It said there were hands in the tunnel that tore her clothes of and molested her. You know Erin definatley had that scene changed and Taaffe got stuck witht he sex related death. An intersting note, in Grace's copy, the scene of Erin's death has all the sexual related descriptions whited out!!!
One of the best versions I have seen so far is the old HK VCD. Its not the best pic quality but it is the brightest one I've seen. It seemed they darkened it to cover things. People I have sent copies to agree and have pointed out a few things they noticed. One is during the riding scene where her leg falls, you can see a white area by her crotch. Its almost like she was wearing so white panties to protect herself but they were cut so she appeared fully nude. The thong in the raising up scene supports this too. Another thing they sent me about is the side leg/ass scene and the breast rubbing scene were filmed using the same part of the maggot. Its more noticeable in this version. You can see the larger tentacle underneath her leg thats held out to the side.
Other interesting facts I heard:
One of the actors seen the guys who opperated the maggot drawing straws to see who was the bottom man inside the suit. They were doing it before the filming.
They took the maggot, which was named "Maggie", outside and took all types of pics with it. One was it looikng into a van.
One of the pyramid coridors was actually loaned out and someone filmed a jean commercial using it.
The vagueness is just a by-product of the "walking the fine line between R and X" rating. (X rated still existed at the time, although it died a few years later.) I didn't know about what you said concerning the Moran scene initially being the sexually-charged one. In the original, was she supposed to die while being stimulated by the hands, or simply crushed? Was it hands or tentacle/cables?
I'm glad they switched that to the worm scene. I think it worked much better than the crushing scene ever would have. It would have been neat if they could have worked it out where Moran was at least stripped before being crushed, but I guess she didn't go for it.
I think that if the worm scene could have been shot with no worries about MPAA, it would have been more graphic and clearer. You can see one tentacle wrapped under her as she's lifted and penetrated the first time, but you don't really view that again. The rest is just simulated, but a very nice simulation! I always thought to be more realistic the scene should have been about twice as long. She just doesn't have enough time to get so scared/excited to have that intense of an orgasm, even by the super-human worm, but it would have been better if she had been rode harder a bit longer, all the while her moaning becoming more intense until finally she gives out. You wouldn't want to drag it out too long because then it would lose some of the intensity, but about 1 full minute of sex before climax would have worked better, I think.
Thanks, vwisniewski. That's actually a pretty fun website, very well researched and aimed right at the gutter. Hat's off.
But someone needs to get that website's operator one of the imported DVD versions without all the screen noise so he can do new screenshots. The best one is a PAL format DVD from Italy that shows a 16x9/1:85:1 transfer and the picture is not darkened: That may have been a decision for North American prints but the one used by Alan Young Pictures for the Italian DVD is a digital transfer from the negatives and you don't have to squint.
RE: Galaxy of Terror, the web site, great little corner of the web to find info on obsure cult movies with screen caps. And the occasional movie clips.
Speaking of which the current clip series is of the very scene being discussed. I'd suggest visiting the site (galaxy-of-terror dot com) and D?Ling those clips while you still can as there's a message, granted posted on April 1st, that seems to indicate there may be a change in management soon too keep the site from disappearing. --- Visit my Blog: http://360.yahoo.com/kester_pelagius
It's funny that you say you've seen "unedited" footage from this scene when Roger Coreman states in interviews that he was angry that he had to cut footage from the original scene so he destroyed the cut footage immediately. Must have had a crystal ball at these FX workshops you were at...
That's what I'm wondering too. They claimed it was destroyed, but there's some seconds of the cut footage in the early trailer. Anyone want to start a petition? lol
I think it's just sloppy script writing. The viewer knows she's dead, but why would the character in the movie who didn't see what happened to the poor gal?
I read an interview with Taaffe O' Connell in "Femme Fatale" magazine where she talks about her "Galaxy of Terror" character; she says in the interview that Damelia suffered from severe sexual repression, which explains her deep-seated fear of phallic worms. The shock and horror of being raped by the giant worm probably caused Damelia to have a very intense orgasm and subsequent fatal heart attack.
If I understand correctly, you said Dameia was severely repressed sexually. I'm interpreting that to mean that she has sexual desire but either will not or cannot express it, due to intense inhibition. When she was raped by the worm, the shock and horror apparently "overrode" her inhibitions and she just released her pent-up, repressed passion all at once, sexually "exploding" with great force, which seems to explain her responding to the worm like she did, thrusting up to meet it when it penetrated her and continuing to respond that way as if she were actually enjoying it.
Am I on target with any of this? Up to now, this part of the movie has kind of confused me.
Be like Robin Hood. Steal from the rich and KEEP IT!
The Giant Slug/Worm Actually Fornicates the Girl! It actually performs a Humping motion as she screams in pain. She finally stops screaming and dies. The worm continues pumping her for a few strokes before it realizes that she's dead. Then, perhaps desiring to maintain a degree of class and propriety, the Worm decides that it doesn't want to engage in Necrophilia (making love with a dead body). IMHO, it might be the most wonderfully indulgent, disgusting, gratuitous, funny, stupid and offensive scenes ever to appear on film.
I can understand why the Slug/Worm was so full of Inseminoidal fluids being trapped up in space so long. Then he meets/rapes a cute chick like Damalia and of course his megaload of cum kills her, flooding the chambers of her heart and stopping it dead. This is no surprise really because we've all heard of women dying during sex from an overdose of ejaculate; men, too, have died during intense intercourse from cardiac arrest. But like the gentleman above me stated, this Worm is NOT a necrophile-- he realizes that Damalia is dead, he got to bust a nut, and his sense of "class and propriety" persuade him to pull out and slink off. I have met and worked with a couple worms before on a space probe near Jupiter (at an FX workshop) and they are NOT the low-lifes that some prejudiced people make them out to be. Worms, escpecailly giant Space Worms, are truly classy and upstanding sentient beings that deserve better treatment from humanoid dirtbags who slander them "maggot rapists".
I havent seen this movie in over 20 years... that rape scene is the only thing I remember about it, that and some vague recollection that Joanie Cunningham was on a space ship. Normally I really hate rape scenes in movies, like the one in Death Wish 2, but I guess this was so unbeleivable the rape was irrelevent, she did look really hot all oiled up for that scene if you can just put the maggot factor out of your mind.
it was the grosses thing i ever seen in a movie. it rub against her until see started to enjoy it and moaned loudly. i saw it in the theather and remember it like it was today.it f@#$ed to death
For some incomprehensable reason, I hadn't remember the rape scene. Which in a way I guess is a good thing because I got to watch it again for the first time again, the other day when I put on the film again some sloppy 20 years after I fisrt saw it.
When the scene came up my friend and I were joking about how she was going to get tentacle-raped. We couldn't believe it actually happened! What a nice piece or contemporary erotic art!
