The impact the theme song had on this film
I think the song For Your Eyes Only by Sheena Easton was (at the time of release) a significant part of this movie's effect onscreen, as well as boosting its reception and popularity.
MTV had just barely launched, and if I remember correctly this song was played a lot which probably drummed up attention, driving viewers to go buy a ticket.
But the song was on the radio constantly too which also drew a lot of attention from cross-demographics.
I haven't looked at the actual numbers, mind you; I'm just going on anecdotal memory alone, and comparing it (informally of course) to the bond films that went before it.
I guess a similar thing could be said about View To A Kill in 1985, but I'd say this one did it first.
(and before anybody jumps down my throat here, yes I do remember 'live and let die' but I don't think it was anywhere near the scale of For Your Eyes Only as far as being used as a marketing device)
