Johnson must have carved uo the Mad Hatter's face pretty bad as he wasn't recognizable. But if he was that badly mutilated how could he have been walking in the open presenting himself as a target for the posse, the agony the shock and why would he want to go anywhere? Also it seems a bit out of character for Johnson to such a ghastly thing to anyone.
shareYeah the scene was a bit puzzling, may be Johnson had him at gun point and ordered him to lead the posse away from him by taking a shot at them and run.. he then gets accidentally shot in the face and disfigured..
shareThat's pretty much how I saw it. He put him in his clothes and pack, and told him to run for it or he'd shoot him on the spot. So he ran, and Edgar blew his face off.
