DID JOHNSON GET AWAY IN REAL LIFE AS IN THE MOVIE?

shareNo, the real Albert Johnson was killed after a long desperate manhunt. The real A.J. was a bad ass too, an expert in survival. He climbed mountains bare handed standed deep cold temperatures with very few equipment. He was shot aftera month of chase, I guess. You can look it up more deeply on the web, search for Albert Johnson, The Mad Trapper of Rat River.
shareBoth Albert Johnson and Edgar Millen were killed during the manhunt, Millen was shot by Johnson and Johnson was eventually killed in a shootout with the posse. The pilot, named "Wop" May, was also working with the Mounties and did not get shot down by the posse to crash into a mountain; he is often credited with having helped to track Johnson down and evacuated a wounded Mountie after the final shootout, and is regarded as a hero. Old Bill Lutz was also based on a real character who was evacuated when he went snowblind and was much older than the character shown in the film, he was a hermit but never chopped anyone's teeth out for their gold. That was a rumor concocted about Johnson to explain why he had a sack of gold teeth in his possession after being killed, along with a couple thousand dollars in cash. To this day nobody knows for sure who he was, where he came from, or how he survived for 51 days in -40 degree weather with no supplies or cold weather gear.
shareI've always figured the real Johnson was something of a skilled woodsman (i.e. he did have some equipment and knew a few things about surviving in the extreme cold) and a functioning psychotic with a very high threshold for pain. His body probably sustained some serious damage, but he didn't care. Good chance that eventually the weather would have killed him if the posse hadn't. You know these old accounts often leave out crucial details. They didn't document like they do now.
shareWow I didn't know all this, seems to me they should have recruited this Albert Johnson to train Navy Seals or something instead of shooting him, unless of course he was really mad.
shareThere's a fairly inexpensive book you can buy on the story if you're interested that's pretty good and has a lot of detail, maps included. I think it's "The Mad Trapper of Rat River". Worth a read if you're interested in the real story.
Here's to the health of Cardinal Puff.
Thanks for the info m8, I'll look it up.
