DVD?

Anybody hear any word about a possible DVD release? I'm dying for one!

reply

I've hooked up two DVD versions of this movie at Ebay.com, but I'm not sure if they are official releases ? One seems to be from the US, and the other from the UK.

reply

I got a British DVD of it but it is definately a bootleg and is in PAL format but it does seem to be longer than the US version (1 hr. 48m).

"We can't stop here. This is bat country!"

Unfortunatley I have not come across a DVD release of this film, which deeply saddens me. I was not sure if anyone else remebered this title, but I guess I was wrong!

Any DVD you find is doubtlessly a copy/bootleg, and looking for one on eBay is like asking to be had. Watch out for "Dunwich Video", who seem to have DVDs of basically every OOP horror movie of interest and those who are selling them will not answer specific questions on their sourcing. You will not find a DVD listing for DARK NIGHT on Amazon, for instance, because none officially exists.

From what I can tell there are two versions of the film that were released for home viewing: Key Video's 1986 NTSC/North American VHS, and an Australian PAL VHS from a company called ShowCase Video from 1987, which is the source of the 1hr 48m version referred to above. THAT'S IT. Anything else is a FRAUD: The film has never been released in the UK for home viewing and no digital transfer of it is described for sourcing a DVD. I have checked extensively, going so far as to pester folks I know in Japan and all they could turn up were DVD-Rs of one of the VHS releases.

Now with that said, if you don't mind having a "copy", a DVD-R that would be moderately priced might be recommended, since original VHS units of the Key Video run between $65 - $150, depending on condition. I lost auctions on them for months and got burnt with two VHS dupes w/cleverly designed sleeves before getting wise and just buying one from an Amazon seller for about $70 w/shipping. I also traded a fellow collector some choice tidbits & picked up an original of the Aussie tape on the first shot for about the same price: two of the genuine prides of my library. But I collect VHS like old men collect stamps, so for me that's nothing. But for someone who just wants to see the film, $15 + shipping for a digitized version that won't degrade with playback might be a good trade off.

And as I can testify to, it's also tough to get an "actual" VHS unit so why risk getting burned [no pun intended] with some lamer's dupe and just go for the most professional looking "copy" you can find, knowing what it is beforehand & getting what you paid for.

So calling 20th Century Fox or whomever may have the writs for this film on file: I'd get a DVD together or else a bunch of nobodies on eBay are gonna make a lot of money off your nifty lil' movie here. You have an audience!! Let's see a re-release!!

can you confirm that the Aussie version has anything extra though? i was thinking that perhaps the US version was possibly time compressed and this may explain why the Aussie version is a few minutes longer. Since it was a made for tv film and it has that running time, it sounds safe to say that it is unlikely that anything is missing from the US version, then again you never know

The DVD I ordered is from Hong Kong and sealed, so I doubt it's a bootleg.
eBay is still listing these versions in NTSC format.

The 108 minute version did come out for rental in the UK circa 1982/83.

It was released by Video Unlimited Motion Pictures (a company long since vanished).

would ya sell me 1 of ur copies by mail or sumthin?

I purchased this dvd off of ebay, I think it is from Hong Kong. I could never get it to work on any of my three dvd players. The seller is the one that sells most of dvds of DNSCarecrow off of ebay. Did anyone have any luck playing this copy? If so what player? Thanks

reply

Just recieved my copy and it does play but I get periodic stops in the video.
The quality is basically poor. Lots of noise and the audio sounds muffled.

It's obviously ripped from the VHS, but I plan to be refunded.

I wish the satellite networks would air it so I can record a nice copy on recordable disc.

That sucks. I have tried this dvd in four different players and none of them played it. I sent it back to the guy and he later sent it back and did not refund my money. In his ad it states that it works on 90% of the players out their which is BS.

i bought 2 dvd's from the same guy on ebay. i bought this and twilight zone:the movie. well, twilight zone played fine....not the best quality, but as good if not better than an old vhs copy, but d.n.o.t.s. wouldn't play on any of the players i've tried so far except my friends laptop comp. i even burned a copy of it from his laptop and it played on there too, but still not on any dvd players. i'm hoping i can find a dvd player that it will play on cause i desperately want to watch it over and over again....lol. this is definitely in my top ten horror movies and i have about 100 or so horror dvd's and would love this to be apart of my collection.

My JVC XV-S40 Dvd player doesn't seem to have a hard time with bootlegged movies that my Toshiba SQPB DVD/Video deck won't play. Anything my JVC can't handle, my PS2 seems to be able to play, but I think it's just time for me to get a cleaner for my JVC.

My e-Bay copy of "Cannibal Holocaust" doesn't play on my JVC, but it plays perfectly on my PS2 and Toshiba. Like I said before, I think it's just time for me to clean out my JVC. It has been quite reliable for years.

Get the codes for your DVD player to play different regional DVDs. All players will play all regions. They are made this way for testing. Just google your make model and the word 'codes'.

Try playing the DVD then.

For 'those in the know' a copy of the film is just now being passed around the internet. I guess if you're going to bootleg it anyway, might as well not be lining someone else's pocket, ya? Its a VHS bootleg, but it sounds like all the others are too. :)

GREAT movie.

I got mine today from eBay. It is indeed a copy, but I don't really give a damn. At least it is now in my collection.

I bought a pristine version of the Key Video VHS off of ebay awhile back and it plays great. It cost me about $65. My friend also bought one and his Dad transfered it to DVD for him and it looks great so that would be one way to go. I just haven't tried it with mine. I'm still hoping they nwill release an official version which would be great.

They were warned...They are doomed...And on Friday the 13th, nothing will save them.
