It's a very good transfer. Twilight Time put it out. If you can find it for 20-30 bucks it's worth it (might be worth 50 if you're really a huge fan I guess!) Definitely not one of those blu-rays that blows you away with its quality, but this isn't that kinda film, you know? All considered, there's no real flaws and it looks vivid and clear and good, still retaining that natural film grain. Just watching the opening credits sequence which looks beautiful is a good example of the nature of the upgrade here.
Sound is pretty good, with a nice extra that allows you to play the movie with the entire, isolated score by Jack Nitzsche. There's also an audio commentary with some scholars/cinephiles though I can't speak to its quality. Otherwise, an essay is all we get in the way of extras.
Overall it's a no-brainer upgrade from that mediocre MGM DVD released 15 years ago, though I do feel that Criterion probably could have done an even better job with it.
