Fate of "Legend of Conan" dependent on "Terminator Genisys" boxoffice

Despite being announced in 2012, "Legend of Conan", the sequel to Schwarzenegger's 1982 movie "Conan the Barbarian", still has no director, release date or formal green light.

In this video, featuring the transition of Conan and Robert E Howard rights from Paradox Entertainment to Cabinet Holdings, the reasons for the hold-up with “Legend of Conan” are also covered.

To summarize, the lawsuit from Stan Lee Media caused Universal to put things on hold for years, and now they may have gotten cold feet after seeing every single Schwarzenegger vehicle since "Legend of Conan" was announced either underperform or outright bomb.

Some speculate that the boxoffice performance of "Terminator Genisys" will decide Conan's fate on film.

What do you think of this?

I have mixed feelings about this.

I want to see another Conan if it will be great like the first one.

But if it is going to suck like all the others, I'd rather it not be made.

The only way to to know for sure would be to watch it after it does get made.

If the studio signed-up an A-list director as the first step, that would ensure it has an audience and minimize the chances that it would suck. The procedure they have been following thus far is butt-backwards (i.e. hiring a slew of screenwriters as the first step, and replacing them as time goes on).

I just watched that video in the OP.

By the way, thanks for the link/update/summary in the OP.

Personally, I don't care about REH or his stories or making a "true to REH" Conan film.

But I did learn a few interesting insights as to some of the reasons why the Momoa abomination turned out so horribly. Before watching the video, I hadn't realized that they originally intended to make a good film but that idea got ruined because they whored the film around to various companies/people.

I ROFL'ed at the commentator's pipe dream to have Marvel make a series of perfect Conan films. Marvel would never have the balls to make even a single good Conan film because they would cower away from being gritty and from designing one that doesn't simultaneously appeal to LCD viewers from every possible demographic.

Don't you know about their recent Daredevil series?

You must not have seen Daredevil. Do. If it was in tehaters, it would be hard R.
That hallway fight is one of the most gritty and brutal ever put on film, people get limbs explicitly chopped off with the camera focused on the bleeding stump, and the Kingpin crushes a guys head to little bloody pieces.

With Daredevil, Marvel showed they actually could make Conan so gritty it would make the Milius movie look like a Disney movie by comparison.

The "Marvel will make it colorful and fun" argument went out the window the moment Daredevil was released.

I don't watch TV via cable or via Netflix, so I'm not up on the doings of all the latest shows until I hear good things about them from word of mouth. Then I watch the good shows selectively. Hence my ignorance about the Daredevil series until it was mentioned in this thread.

My comments about Marvel were based on the Marvel comics I read as a kid (Daredevil comics were certainly nothing special back then, LOL), and the big Marvel movies of recent years (I.e. Iron Man, Thor, Avengers, GoTG etc.)...if they made a Conan movie like that, it would be a laughable joke that might as well be called Conan the Destroyer Part II.

After reading these comments, I concede that probably Marvel has done something better with Daredevil of which I was not aware. Thanks for the recommendation.

Check out Marvel/Netfix Daredevil. You won't regret it, and see just how good a fit they could be for Conan if stars aligned.
