Hi all,
I am very confused because the version of "Heroes" sounds so very different from the versions I have heard before. I understand that it was a single that was not released elsewhere but the singer's voice is so different while the music is identical. Anyone else feel this way, or know something for certain?

The film features "Heroes-Helden" -the german single release.
Its available on the soundtrack-worth picking up purely for that. im not sure if its due to over exsposure to the original (perhaps the BEST single ever!)but i think i prefer the german version.
........sorry to rant but bands such as oasis or kasabian who try to cover "Heroes" should be severly punished. What can be gained from trying to tackle such a perfect peice of brilliant pop? The alchemy involved (bowie,visconti,eno and berlin)could never be repeated.
I agree that the German version is better, but when he sings in English it does not sound like him. Perhaps they sped up the song, giving a higher pitch-like quality?
shareI'm sorry, but like everybody from my generation I have seen Ch.F., as a part of the German lessons in school! I'm pretty sure the lyrics was in english....anyway it does not really matter...the images of running though the Mall and "Heroes" is forever imprinted in my mind!
shareOh so our school wasn't the only one :o) yes I remember the running through the mall scene as well. I remember my head was just filled with images after watching the movie in class, not really a storyline or plot, just images and scenes. And that was definetely one of the ones that stuck in my mind.
About the music though, yes he was singing in English but there is indeed a version where he sings the song as a mix of both languages (first in German, then it goes over to English) - I think that version is on the soundtrack but you don't hear the German bit in the movie itself.

The German version of HEROES is called HELDEN, and is basically the middle section of HEROES that is foten heard as the single version, (starting at I WISH YOU COULD SWIM) but sung in German. The version on CHRISTIANEF is called HEROES/HELDEN, it starts in English (when they are running around the shopping centre) then fades out as they reach the roof top. When Christiane is in the U-Bahn and looks up at a poster advertising DAVID BOWIE -IN CONCERT, the song continues, and this is the German middle section, which then goes back into English for the last 2 lines or so of the song, as she is in her bedroonm, making herself a tattoo with indian ink)
The song does sound speeded up a bit, abd gives BOWIE a slightly high pitched sound
Bowie recorded 'heroes' in german as 'heroes/helden' and french as 'heros'.
i seem to vaguely remember a spanish version, but that may be my memory playing tricks.
i have many versions of 'heroes' mainly live on bootlegs and "official live recordings". the best is 'heroes/helden'. try to catch Bowie singing it on Beat Club ... the german pop program from the seventies and eighties.
also check out Nico's version (sung in english, very guitar-influenced. very ironic)

The german/english version is defintely the best! When he's singing in german it just sounds more, I don't know, emotional I guess. Just great. I actually don't like to hear the english only version now. It just doesn't hit me like Helden...
share"Helden" sounds not different to me, than "Heroes"!! Or is that perhaps some are not understanding the english lyrics????
The English lyrics are completly translated almost 1:1 to German, the presentation is nearly the same!!!
So what´s the big difference????????
