I saw this movie 30 years ago and have never even smoked a joint !

The most compelling and confronting movie I have ever seen, I will be making sure my children see this when they reach 13/14, I can still see so vividly some of the graphic horrendous and shocking scenes that will live with me forever. I never touched a drug after seeing that movie, I was offered plenty. A must for teenagers.

I read the book when I was twelve and I never touched anything in my life. Definitely a must read for children.

Both the book and the movie had a huge impact on me as a preteen/teenager. The reason it had such an impact is because it mirrored the drug scene of my time (the 80's). I wish you could show this to teenagers today and it'd have the same impact, but working with teenagers I'm afraid it won't. The drug scene today differs a lot from the one described by Christiane. Drug addicts are not mainly junkies, most in fact are not. They are pill popping and powder sniffing. It's just as bad, but it's a whole different scene than the one Christiane faced in the mid to late 70's. I'm from Denmark, and a Danish author wrote a book about the drug scene in modern day Denmark, that I hope will resonate with youth today. It's been made in to a movie as well - check out Nordkraft.
