This winning best picture proves that the Academy is BS

REDS was far superior to this film and REDS is still talked about and discussed today.

Ask anyone what won best picture in 1981....they don't remember this boring dreck

Take away the score from Chariots and you have nothing left

REDS was robbed!

reply

I agree 100%. This is coming from a huge Raiders fan as well. Reds was a superb film.

I do like a number of things about this film... the score, the cinematography, and especially the post WWI transitional themes. But it is a flawed film without well rounded characters or stand-out performances. I gave it a generous 7. I'd take On Golden Pond, Reds, or Raiders of the Lost Arc over it. I have yet to see Atlantic City, which was also nominated in this group.

The Shining not even nominated...

The Shining was released the year prior (May 1980).

Indeed, this was one of the most questionable best pictures picks. Reds or Raiders are far superior films. Of course the worst pick of all time was "Shakespeare in Love" over "Saving Private Ryan".

reply

Agreed. Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan is, in this person's opinion, the most outrageous upset for Best Picture.

5 outstanding movies nominated that year.

Of the 5 ATLANTIC CITY is the one I liked the most - but that sadly was shut out.

The other four best picture nominees all won 3 or more Oscars (CHARIOTS and RAIDERS - 4, ON GOLDEN POND and REDS - 3). I don't think that ever happened before or since.
