John Williams

I think the main theme to this movie is really good, but it was up against Raiders of the Lost Ark at the 1981 Academy Awards. Does anyone else think that John Williams should have won best original score?

Williams won five Oscars during his career, but his two best scores (in my opinion) lost to completely inferior ones: Raiders to Chariots of Fire, and Superman to Midnight Express. The Chariots of Fire theme is used only in the opening and closing sequences of the film, anyway, and the rest of the score was nothing to write home about. Raiders I would say had memorable themes besides the Indy adventure motif, and in its leitmotif approach was far more closely involved with the storytelling and characters. I know Vangelis has his followers, but it would have been a clear win for John Williams if it were up to me. And I preferred the music in On Golden Pond to Chariots of Fire too. Though, as a score, that also was far less developed and varied than Williams's, consisting of just a few pieces of music written to be used in certain places only.

Can we just admit that Williams is a god in this field?
