As most of you know, this film is the BEST submarine film ever made. I had a question about Johann. Several times he is seen with a funnel like devise in his ear near the engines. WHAT IS HE LISTENING FOR?!

It's an engine stethoscope.

Most mechanics nowadays don't use it anymore (on cars anyway, maybe it's still used on big engines like a ship engine?), but if you happen to know an older car mechanic, he may still have one, and if you ask nicely maybe he'll let you listen :)

It's for listening INSIDE the engine.

It doesn't have to be anything specific. Certain sounds, clickings etc give clues about how certain parts are working, or are not working, or need oiling, etc.

Never be complete.
