Loved this movie, but thinking back on it I was confused by the clown that William Hurt sees when he's in Miami.
The shot lingers on the clown, and seems to impart some significance to him. Any takes on the purpose of including the (seemingly out-of-place) clown in a neo-noir?

Add the fact that they both drive red convertibles and it's clear that the clown is meant to represent Ned. What I thought would have been really cool is if William Hurt had actually played the clown as well, but I've looked at the face carefully and it doesn't appear to be him.

Yeah, both are in red convertibles, and the clown is meant to symbolize that Hurt is an idiot, being played. It's not too far from the ending, because it's meant to be a more subtle hint at that point.
I felt the same way about the scene where she gives him the hat -- it's obviously partly to invoke the 40's Noir feel, but it also makes him seem a little goofy, and it's also an example/symbol of her dressing him up to take the fall.
