Does anybody how the boathouse at the end of the movie blew up? If matty did it she would be dead, and someone had to open the door for the bomb to explode.
who detonated the bomb?

There's a lot of things in this movie that don't make sense. You have to just go along with the movie to enjoy it. How did Mattie survive that boathouse explosion? It's never explained.

Remember how Teddy told Ned he showed Matty how to rig the bomb with a small delay? Maybe she made the delay long enough so she could open the door and run away.

The real Matty was already dead in the boathouse. Mary Ann Simpson (who was Matty to Ned) went to the boathouse for the glasses. And then, she got away. Remember when Ned looks at the yearbook and is able to confirm what he already suspects "she's alive" Then they show Mary Ann The Vamp on a tropical island at the end.

Also in the yearbook was the listing that Mary Ann (Turner) was a swimmer for two years.

So, she opens the door, uses the 2-3 second delay to jump in the water right behind her, explosion, surface and swim away.

She would have had a difficult time coming out of the surf, sopping wet, with nothing on her, but as the movie showed, Mattie was a resourceful, relentless woman. Those details of "how" wouldn't have mattered to the surprise ending building up.

Everything makes sense, u just didn't get it!
She told Rourke she wanted a delay on the bomb, enough time to run away.
She didn't survive the explosion 'coz she wasn't there!

i really think it is 1 of them films you have to watch a second time as alot of people missed stuff, the plot is very sharp.

We are given two clues as to how Matty (Mary Ann) pulled it off: 1, she asked for the bomb to have "a little delay" (to allow her to get to the water after she opened the boathouse door), and 2, she was on the high school swim team, which would appear to indicate she was a good swimmer.

Since it's clear that Matty/Mary Ann was "relentless" and ALWAYS was several steps ahead of Ned, my guess would be that she planned ahead and had clothes and money stashed on the other side of the lake, where she could swim to it and then make her getaway. Why else would she ask for the bomb to have a delay??? She knew there was the possibility Ned wouldn't open the door, so she had a Plan B.

I've wondered about this myself over the years... I guess I never thought about the delay being anything more than enough time to get Ned fully in the boathouse. It seems, had he opened the door he would have seen the wire... But even so, he wouldn't have had time being that he wasn't supposed to expect it to get far enough away to survive. She on the other hand...... I think her plan all along was favoring him getting tipped off. She would have had to know exactly when the cops would get there though so Ned couldn't get away... She also had to believe they had enough proof to convict him. He surely would have hunted her down if not. That's a bit thin too but it works I guess.

I think the above post is as close as it could be to the truth. I admit I missed the swim team reveal.. She covered her bases with a plan B. She didn't seem to be concerned that Ned would hear about her inquiries into him throughout the movie, even with his friends... She pretty much counted on it... That's pretty savvy for a non professional killer. I suppose there are some out there it comes naturally to... But it's a little "suspension of disbelief". The similar ending of Masquerade was a little more conceivable though.

That's my theory also.

Very hard to pull off, but still plausable.

only Matty knew there is a small delay prior to BOOM cause she was the one who contracted Rourke to make the bomb.
Ned would've just waltzed in and while "searching" for the glasses that weren't there.. he'd go bang
