The scenes with Jack...

Just watched this movie again for the first time in years, and while it naturally isn't as impressive as it was when it first came out, it is still really worth a watch.

What made the movie good were the scenes with Jack from start to finish. The relationship between the two friends is excellently portrayed, and it only gets more interesting after Jack dies. Especially the scene in the porn theatre is deliciously surreal; the atmosphere is thick with absurdity and morbid humour. Truly great. And it occurred to me that the talking rabbit-bit in Donnie Darko must have been lifted from this movie to some degree.

Good post, WingsOfWax. I re-watched this movie on Film4 here in the UK a few nights ago and I agree completely with everything you said. The scenes featuring Jack, to me, just seemed on a superior plane compared to the rest of the scenes in the movie; the acting, dialogue, editing and direction all shifted from mediocre to very good, imo.
