Great ending. The Media is the enemy.

I love the theme - the media is the enemy. Why? Because they can slander whomever at will and not be held accountable.

GREAT MOVIE!

i really hope that is sarcasm.

anyway, i think you could argue that newman was a private figure, not a public one, sure he was in the paper once connected to his father, but when all is said and done he is a private citizen, therefore sally field is was given bad advice by her lawyer. thus she shouldn't have been able to hide under the banner od absence of malice. and if newman was a private figure i guess she could be held for liable

but if you are going with newman as a public figure, i guess you can get sally field on negligance??

im not an expert, don't quote me (no pun intended)

The message of this movie is not that the media is the enemy, thats made rather clear by that last little speech Sally Field gave, but rather that a lack of ethics in any profession, be it journalism, a prosecutor, a district attorney, whatever, is the enemy.

Actually, print media can't slander anyone. They can only libel. It's not fair, everyone should have the chance to slander.

I agree this is a pretty solid movie about the media. Great cast too with many recognizable faces beyond just Newman and Field.

Still, as far as media films go it doesn't reach the brilliance of "Network" which was amazingly prophetic about the blurring of the lines between entertainment, agenda, and factual news.

I don't think this movie is about the media at all. It's about Paul Newman's character, and how he screws over the prosecutors that set him up and ruined his life and caused his friend's suicide.

It's just another clever "rise to the surface no matter what hits ya" character movie, a character that Newman excelled at playing.

. . . . . . . .

Right. Which is 180 degrees from the truth. The rich and the powerful can bring down power to censor anyone, and ruin individual journalists (re: George HW Bush, Wm. S Paley, and Daniel Schorr).

Who cares. Journalism is dead now, its all biased. The only truth is on fark.com

One of my absolute favoritre Newman films. This movie is completely underrated and deserves more love.

Everyone was wrong, especially the media and that holds true today.

The liberal crusading modern media does makes it even worse now.

This was a great movie about the power of the media.
No question about it.
