When the principle characters who thought they were so smart (using Newman's character as a useful stepping stone for their personal selfish career ambitions) finding out that none of them was anywhere near as clever as their 'victim'. The slow realisation they'd all been played and that they weren't as clever as they tought they were was an absolute masterclass in how movies should be made.

It's been awhile since I've seen the movie but I thought his 'mob connections' did nothing for him. I even recall him meeting his uncle and subtally telling him 'things' were going to happen and that he should stay out of it.

I agree. That's one of my favorite scenes from any movie. Sydney Pollack was a master director, and several of his films are among my favorites. I miss him.
