melinda dillon

Melinda Dillon should have won the best supporting actress Oscar for this.

The scene with Sally Field, the innocent trying to do the right thing, is heartbreaking, as is when she's huddled on the steps, waiting for the newspapers, then runs down the block trying to gather them all.

I find it very hard to argue against Maureen Stapleton winning for Reds - and Maureen Stapleton in general is amazing; she had been so wonderful in her two previous nominated roles in Airport and Interiors that the idea of her losing again seems just wrong, even cruel - but maybe Melinda will still appear in something that will nail her that elusive award!

You actually sat through Reds?

With me it was her as Hanrahan's wife in Slap Shot. Specifically the scene in bed with Reggie (Paul Newman). Pretty funny and eye opening.

That was a remarkable moment in film. The poor girl desperately wants to maintain her status, her actions seem momentarily logical, but so futile, and there is no place left for her to go. This reminds me of the Zapruder film, where Jackie Kennedy desperately climbs back onto the rear of the car to try to .... I can't say any more on this. It is too obvious what she was doing.

I haven't seen Joan Hackett's performance yet but Dillon gave a wonderful performance as the fragile Teresa. The scene you mention is unforgettable, of course, but I think her best one is the one with Sally Field; the desperation is almost tangible there.
