would this be a good movie to show to a high school journalism class?

reply

this is the movie that we're watching in my high school journalism class right now!

reply

Absolutely. I absorbed this film at 11 years old. It's a rare bird among films, as it actually manages to communicate the value of integrity without being preachy, emotionally overwrought, ham-handed, etc.

The definition of journalism is changing these days. All it takes is being a persistent blogger who draws a crowd.

Even if the students don't end up pursuing careers in journalism and/or working for established publications or networks, they'll have more potential for journalistic power that we of previous generations. Any tool available that illustrates the consequences of irresponsible journalism is worth using, and when it comes to films as that tool, Absence of Malice is tough to beat.

reply

Yes, and explain its problems and contrast it to actual cases.

reply

I could understand showing certain scenes as part of a lesson plan, but the whole movie? That just sounds lazy.
