One of my favourite films with one of the greatest denouement ever
Paul Newman is superb as always, but this film is so intelligent and understated the breathtaking ending really does catch you out on first viewing.

Agreed. The "inquiry" scene near the end is a thing of beauty.
"Let me tell you, you're a smart fella. Don't get too smart. I'm pretty smart myself."
"Everyone in the room is smart. Everyone's just doing their job. And Teresa Perrone is dead. Who do I see about that?"
"Ain't no one to see. I wish there was. You're excused now, sir."
Absolutely agree. I loved Paul Newman in this. The movie reminded me of A Man For All Seasons in many ways. Mainly how zealous and hasty everyone is except for Gallagher. First they ruin other peoples lives, then he traps them into ruining theirs. Brilliant.
