delboys love of takeaways, why no McDonalds?

We see him regularly eating currys, kebabs, fish and chips, fried chicken and chips, food from the pub and cafe. So why no McDonalds and kfc?

Probably due to the BBC's rules of avoiding brand names and product placement.

"Stop listening to music made by poofs - Stick on some Elton John".

In the episode where Raquels parents come round for dinner Albert wonders why they are taking so long to eat and Del explains how they aren't golloping down a big Mac & Chips.

I think that was the only McDonalds reference I recall.

...isn't there also an episode where Rodney asks his assistant to go and get him a big mac cause he's starving ? from " rodney come home " maybe...

reply

I think Rodney only asked for his assistant to go get him the greasiest burger on offer at the precinct in that episode. McDonalds wasn't actually referenced.

...yes , spot on ! After posting my comment, I went and watched the episode. It also contains my all-time favourite scene from OFAH , where uncle albert has to looked absolutely horrified cause rodney's taking some bird out on a date ! Classic !!!

I find it refreshing that brand names aren't pushed in our faces on British shows, unlike American ones where you can't go an episode without some product brand being involved. I guess the tv companies get paid huge amounts to include these brands in their shows.

Even though Albert mixes up Bisto gravy granules and Maxwell house coffee. Also in 'The class of 62 when Rodney tells Del he has a fax he's holding a can of Pepsi and Del orders three Coca Cola's for Rodney and his mates in the club not to mention the copies of The Sun newspaper seen throughout the years. There's lots more I can't think of right now.

There's a moral to this story Del Boy but for the life of me I can't find it!

in later seasons as well, especially the 96 3 episodes, they mention The Daily Mirror quite a lot. It stands out in my mind as I remembered Daily Mirror actually ran it as a story that they get mentioned and the logo is on quite a lot of billboards in the background.

Del also mentions that "Boycie went to the wedding, smelling like a Big Mac" in Strangers on the Shore.

And in A Royal Flush, Rodney says there's a McDonalds on the high street to Victoria (that was her name wasn't it?) instead of going to the Fatty Thumb.

Oh yeah totally forgot that one and its one of my fave episodes.

Was that mention in the uncut version? not seen that one in so long as I believe its only available on video and I don't have the video anymore. I don't recall it in the DVD version but I could be wrong.

Isn't there another mention of McDonalds, I recall an episode where Del says something along the lines of "...that's like asking McDonalds to look after your cow"
I can't remember what episode or even what he was referring to (maybe Albert babysitting or something).

To answer the original question my guess would be that Del probably wouldn't be a fan of McDonalds, too modern too American and too expensive, I don't think he'd eat it very often.

you're right!

Miami Twice - Albert will be there to look after Raquel & Damien

reply

I think Del probably liked to go to locally owned businesses maybe even owned by people he knew who did him a fair price, let him eat on slate when he was short on cash and bought his rotten tomatoes or other hooky goods.

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time Del Boy, it's them that started me drinking!

reply

Because he is a true British. He takes no Yankee crap.

I don't think it's supposed to mean a whole lot. It's possible an Emperor Burger is merely a concoction in their local chippy and happens to not come with cheese as standard.
