"Don't PANIC"

No........it's not working.

Def Mos?
Sam Rockwell?

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH.

Martin Freeman, not my first choice either, But a least he's British.

The only one I like is Bill Nighy.

reply

Mos Def.

reply

Sam rockwell i can tolerate, everyone else on the list (bar malkovich) is totally bleh... well, maybe Zooey is as good as anybody else. for the riole of Arthur I would suggest Steve Coogan, and Ford Prefect should be played by the talented Johnny Depp.

Just a few thoughts, and please, can we some how find away to kill Mos Def, or at least limit his vocal capacities so as to render him useless for any further film work.

reply

Oh MAN!! Yeah!
I can totally see Johnny Depp as Ford!!

That would make it worth seeing at least.
:O)

Yeah, that's a good point.
Depp is one of the few actors that can completely emerse (sp?)
himself into a character, and become that charactrer. So i've never got
that 'JD as ____' feel to anything he's played.

But, you are probably ..with a character as known and loved as Ford, it
might be hard not to 'see' someone like Depp.

I am curious how what's-his-name is going to pull it off.
Coming out soon! :O)

It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.

reply

Zoey is NOT as good as anyone else!!!!

I hate that she is american. How can they do that to me???? I am a physicist. I am intellegent. I am a woman. I am basically trillian. I just haven't left earth yet. It kills me how she has been portrayed in the TV series.

Any of the other characters I can believe as being American, but her and Arthur are just WRONG as american! OK, i know that Arthur isn't being played by an american, so I am happy about that. Do you know who would be good as him, though? I can't remember his name, but he plays mark in peep show. He'd be ok.

As for Mos Def, I think he can pull it off. As long as he doesn't try to do an english accent and doesn't play it as a typical black man, like eddie murphy or something, then it will be good. I can see him as ford. Do you know, when I imagined him when I read the book (which I did first), I imagined him as being blue. I was only 10 or so, so the reality of a blue person being somewhat noticeable hadn't really crossed my mind, but that is how i imagined him. A light aqua-marine type blue. The coulour of Mos def means absolutely nothing to me.

reply

and Ford Prefect should be played by the talented Johnny Depp.

NO. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.

Look, I don't mind Depp, but he is seriously not-Ford. Mos Def did a brilliant job.

It's Mos Def and I'll admit to only two things: he's a great, great rapper...one of the brightest in indie hip-hop who is finally getting more public acceptance and I'm happy for him...also, he has done a fine job in acting (I loved him in Monster's Ball). You have to remember, he was an actor before rapper, and if I remember correctly, went to school for stage and did some plays before even recording his first album (much like Tupac, actually...)

But he's not Ford. My perfect cast was always Ewan McGregor as Arthur and Robert Carlyle as Ford. Also, it doesn't matter what nationality Zaphod is, since he's an ALIEN (I suppose the same could go for Ford, too). I've always seen him as more badass, though, and I'm sure you'll bay like sheep when I say this, but I wanted a horribly mean looking, tough guy to be him, like...*wait for it*...Vin Diesel. Oh, and Diane Kruger would make a great Trillian.

Sam will do okay, though, perhaps. I've never seen the Office, so I can't say much about the choice for Arthur...

But Ewan and Robert...god, that would have been great. In fact, I'm re-reading the books now and they're in place with Vin and Diane in their places and it's a great movie right there...in my head, where cynicism isn't allowed to be.

Ford can't be cast as anyone, mrdiabolikal. He has to be white. Because I've read all the way up to LTUAE, and so far, Ford hasn't seemed to change from his human costume (at least I think it's a costume).

reply

I don't really see why Ford couldn't be black. Sure, that's not really how I pictured him, either, but it never specifically says anywhere that he is white. I could be remembering this wrong, so please correct me if I am.

reply

Because black people aren't human?

I'm not even sure what you have written makes sense. I believe he is supposed to be humanoid, with "wiry ginger hair", or something like that. various things about his skin looking a little wierd, stuff like that. But nowhere does it say, by the way, he's white. Anyway, have you not forgotten that this is a new version of the story? It has a new plot, and certain things can change. The englishness of Arthur and Trillian are central to the comedy of the story. Ford being black, or white, or any other colour, is not. Who cares?

reply

you are a *beep* idiot.

vin disel?

Please. He wouldn't understand what he was saying. Probably wouldn't even be able to pronounce most of it either. And i haev to say that although I love ewan to bits, he would be so very, very wrong. you need someone who doesn't quite know whats going on most of the time and just wants to have a nice quiet life. that is not ewan's image. and robert carlyle wouldn't do, either. He's just too laddish. Ford needs to appear desperately intelegent as well as a rebel type. I don't know who Diane Kruger is, but I bet you couldn't imagine her sitting down and doing A fourier transform.

reply

I think that the choice for Arthur is almost absolutely spot-on, Freeman can give a very real performance.

reply

To bbagnall,
I think the cast is perfect. I just read the words wrong and thought it said Sam Rockwell was playing Ford (and Mos Def was playing Zaphod). But yes, my mistake. But the point still stands! I have not once read about Ford being in anything but human form.

Ed Wood? Damn, I tried, most people didn't take him seriously either.

I've never actually heard of Mos Def until the movie. Has he rapped anything recent?

Ok, my 2 cents.

Absolutely agree that J. Depp would be the ideal Ford Prefect, my only qualm would be that he would steal the picture.

I am actually happy with the office guy being Dent, I think it is a case of right time right place for that guy and it will work out ok.

Trillian is Keira Knightly in my head. Purely because I need to lust after Trilly and I certainly lust after Keira. But if she could nail the English accent I think the lady in Fastlane (TV Series) would be a cool Trillian.

Rickman as Marvins voice is the only piece of casting I am 110% sure they got right.

Zaphod was always should be Owen Wilson end of.

Why does everyone want to cast johnny depp as everything?

Jesus christ is he overrated.

It's all wrapped up in a big bag like disco fudge! It just doesn't get much better than that.-Tyres

reply

Don't mind him, he hates Depp because he hates Burton. In the meantime, I think Depp's mannerisms would be pretty interesting to see as Prefect, but at the same time, Mos Def does have that sort of smile that Adams described Prefect in the book.
Besides, the people in charge of the movie were too close to Adam's to let it fall anything short of faithful to his original vision.

Wow... and here I thought somebody posting on IMDb would be familiar with using IMDb. Allow me to address your assertions:

1)isn't famous

Famous is a relative term, really. How do you determine if someone is famous? Well, for Mos Def, you could do a simple search here on IMDb: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0080049/

2)isn't an actor
Now you're really making yourself look dumb.
Again, http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0080049/. Now, how long do those acting credits go back? Tell me.

3)has no credibility
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0080049/
This is getting redundent, I know. But all the information you need is right here. Mos has been nominated for an emmy, and a good number of the movies he's listed under are pretty highly regarded.

4)has never done any known role before
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0080049/
I'm sorry that you've never seen The Italian Job, or Monster's Ball, Something the Lord Made, The Woodsman, or Bamboozled. But just because you're not familiar with him doesn't make him a nobody.

And Martin Freeman is a British actor, who is famous in Britain, and starring in a British movie from a British director that was filmed in Britain.
