My take on this
Sorry I can't read all the other reviews but there are a few points I need to make. I first heard the show on the wireless back in the late 70s. I recall vividly the story of the infinite improbability drive and how it ran on a cup of "really hot tea" (Peter Jones was brilliant as the book) within a year I had the LP record of The Restaurant at the end of the universe and not long after, the double lp of The Hitchhikers guide. When I heard there was a television adaptation planned I was very excited. I wish I could have liked it more than I did. IMHO Sandra Dickinson as Trillian was a big disappointment. The fact she was played as an American upset me greatly as I enjoyed Cindy Oswin's portrayal immensely on the lp recording, Susan Sheridan who played Trillian on the radio was much better than either of them. Arthur Dent's charcater was perfect but David Dixon's portrayal of Ford Prefect was abysmal. No one had a better speaking voice on the radio show than Geoffrey McGivern. He was made for that role (I don't know if he had a good face for radio - I don't really care) Richard Vernon was perfect as was Slartibartfast. There were some strange things that were included in the TV show which didn't feature in the lp recording (like the Dish of the day at the Restaurant) which I really liked.
There's only one other thing I can say about the television show, it wasn't as good as the radio program but it was much, much better than the subsequent movie which was a massive disappointment.
