Why didn't the BBC use another actor standing behind like they did with the extra arms, the technology was just too primitive for the BBC to handle correctly at the time that this particular addaptation was made.
It could have worked, but I liked the head.

I mean, there are a lot of rubbish effects in the mini series. It's clearly making use of the same resources as Doctor Who had at the time (and probably the same quarry), trying to do some really ambitious stuff without more money or rehearsal time than any other sci-fi got on the BBC in the 70s or 80s. The writing is so clever and funny that it's largely irrelevant. The Hollywood movie is glitzy and gorgeous to a fault, but the jokes are mostly unfinished so it doesn't have nearly he same-sized impact on most viewers IMO.
