New York kids in a California high school?

Does it bother anyone else that half of Ralph's special ed class talks like they are "Welcome Back Kotter" rejects and the school is in California? If it was just Michael Pare it would be OK but when the girl's talk with those forced phony Brooklyn accents, it gets annoying as piss to watch.

It always annoyed me. I never really liked Ralph's class. I know some people do b/c it shows Ralph's daily life and how the suit interferes with his daily life, but I was not a fan of that class.

For one thing they all looked way too old to be believable high school kids. Yes I know they are a special ed class and you can argue they failed a couple of times, but even 19 year olds don't look like that. They all looked around 27 to me, or maybey 22 at the youngest, basically b/c they were. I know Connie Sellecca said on the DVD interviews that the actors who played the high school kids were her age at the time (about 25) but since they were playing high schoolers, they treated Connie, William Katt and Robert Culp like "the adults" and didn't include them in their off camera fun, even though they were about the same age as Sellecca and Katt..

The other problem I had was this class from 1980/'81 looked dated by the mid 80s. So their style and lingo became rather ridiculous after a few years. By the late 80s and into the 90s the class was kinda unbearable for me.

I also didn't like their Brooklyn/northeastern accents.

Yeah, I did find it funny that they for the most part sounded like street urchins from a Bowery Boys movie.

When theres no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.

Thank you! I was going to make my own thread about this, but since it was already started 4 years ago, I will happily agree with the OP! Every time I watch it I am very annoyed with the kids in the class. They were suppose to be California kids! As the OP said, they sounded like Welcome Back Kotter rejects!😁

Lots of East Coasters move to California, no problem.

The real issue is that the "kids" were in their mid 20s.
