The chief was a grumpy old man.

I couldn't believe how grumpy the chief was especially towards his daughters.

He was sort of like Archie Bunker in that way. It was hard for him to relate to them, yet he certainly loved them. He might've also been a little overprotective, since he was a cop.

Old man is right. He seemed a little old to be these girls' father. I know it's not that unusual for an older man to be a father, but this guy even looked like a grandpa. I haven't seen the show in a long time, so I don't remember if they ever mentioned this at all. Related to that older thread, I definitely like the seasons with Chief better, though.

Yeah, his hair was grayish, but that didn't bother me. Don't forget, the oldest daughter Katie was 16 when the show started, so obviously he was a father for over a decade.

plus this was era when people smoked much more ate differently etc. So he is going to age faster. Police chiefs even today on tv look younger.

Look @ the commissioner on the 1960's Batman series. They are elderly too. And yet Commissioner Gordon has a young Barbara Gordon as his daughter?? That right there should be an excellent 'no smoking' argument.

He was supposed to be.

He took Joey in, so I don't think so.
