Is this film better than 'Silent Night, Deadly Night'?

Just wondering.

Depends what kind of movie you're looking to see. You Better Watch Out/Christmas Evil is more of a character study with slasher elements than a straight away slasher film.

I noticed that you (oiginal poster) is a Black Christmas fan. Well, Neither of these two Xmas films pale in comparison! But if during christmas time you want to make it a Xmas-horror-themed movie night then both these films are good in their own way. The last poster said it best that Christmas Evil is more of a character study. Silent Night Deadly Night is a mean-spirited slasher film (but still a pretty good one). I'd stay away from the sequels!
You might also try the similar-titled 'Silent Night Bloody Night', which is creepy for its atmosphere.

"Santa's Slay" is pretty good for some laughs as well.

As a Monte Hellman fan, I must protest (slightly). He directed the third installment of the Silent Night, Deadly Night "franchise."

Silent Night Deadly Night Is A Better Slasher, Then Christmas Evil
But Xmas Evil Is Awesome As Well.
There Are Only 3 Awesome Xmas Slasher's
1. Black Christmas
2. Silent Night Deadly Night
3. Christmas Evil

reply

Hell no. It's quite possibly the worst Christmas slasher in existence.

I just watched Christmas Evil and Silent Night, Deadly Night, parts 1 and 2, for the first time over the past couple days. I enjoyed Silent Night and its sequel better than Christmas Evil, but the other posters are right, they're two entirely different movies and are hard to compare to each other.

For years now I have been watching Silent Night Deadly Night parts 1 and 2 on Christmas eve. Christmas Evil is so much more cerebral than the other franchise that it becomes somewhat of a drag at times to watch. I don't even "really" consider it to be a true horror film.

reply

No it's worse.

People, People please. Neither of them are as good as "Don't Open Till Christmas."

To the world you may just be somebody, but to somebody you may just be the world.

Silent night is definitely a classic. Covered with 80s cheese.

This Christmas Evil thing has this cool alternative name and nice dvd-cover. Original title "You Better Watch Out" fits better to this film. You really better watch out watching this! Hard to find anything good about this. It may be seen as some sort of pioneer of christmas horror films only.

Film is slow-moving and boring. More like any slasher-type film, this is sort of character study thriller. Was really bad and huge disappointment.

You Better Watch Out is an absolute treat. A cult gem which is well worth buying. Black Christmas, You Better Watch Out & Silent Night, Deadly Night are all excellent films in different ways; the first is a chilling Horror; the second a compellingly convincing character study with a superb lead performance; the third is a wonderfully fun, sleazy & gory slasher.

reply

They're all good: black christmas, you better watch out, silent night/deadly night in different ways. This is more of a dark comedy, if you're into that.

reply

Completely agree with the above two posters.

Neither of them are as good as "Don't Open Till Christmas."

In all seriousness though, I prefer Silent Night, Deadly Night. But Christmas Evil ain't so shabby either, it has a pretty interesting main character.
