Just saw it for the first time tonight. **SPOILERS**
Wow, this movie was just insane! A boy seeing his dad dressed as Santa getting all X-rated with mom right in the living room (Scarred 4 Life, that kid is!), and as a result, the kid grows up into a man obsessed with Santa Claus himself!
Surrounded by commercialization and mean-spirited behavior, Harry (Brendan Maggart, Fiona Apple's dad) finally cracks and decides it's time to bring the joy and innocence of the holidays back. So he becomes the one thing he is convinced he is: Santa himself.
As Saint Nick, he decides to reward the kids that deserve rewards, but punish the naughty, and I DON'T mean SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT style! That is what I like about this movie. Instead of focusing on gore EFX and nihilistic violence, it focused on the character of Harry, and his slow decent into madness. But, instead of making it 100% disturbing, at times the movie tried to show it from Harry's perspective, to show that in his own way he is happy and content with his role as Santa Claus. Plus, the people that die aren't very likable in the first place. So, in a sense, we feel like Harry is the hero of the movie. It also makes you feel for him. It makes you feel like he, in the long run (from the trauma from childhood, his bitter relationship with his brother, being pushed over the edge, and finally being hunted by authorities), is the true victim of this whole movie.
So, in conclusion, if you are looking for a Christmas related thriller besides Black Christmas to watch on the holiday season, watch this. Not only does it feel like a real psychological thriller, but it also contains a bit of holiday satire as well.
I'm so scared your little head will come off in my hands!
