Great Nostalgia
I don't care what ANYONE says, I love this movie. Yes, it's a bit schmaltzy, but just pure fun!

It's sort of a guilty pleasure for me.
shareYeah, it's schmaltzy and that's what make it so great. That and Gene, Olivia and the music of ELO. It's the perfect antidote against the current cynical zeitgeist.
shareMy parents grew up listening to big band music in their teens so from that perspective it's fun.
This is great nostalgia for me personally, because I was FINALLY getting out of high school, starting college when this movie was made. I first saw this movie on Preview...an early version of paid cable.
ELO was in heavy rotation on AM radio (FM wasn't as it is now).
Now sadly, 1970s music is considered oldies.
Nobody ever said that a train wreck cannot be enjoyable. at least in a perverse way.
Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...
If we were talking in the real world, my dad was 17 and my mom was 14 in 1945 so they both would've listened to Danny McGuire. Both absolutely DID listen to big band music including Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey, and the Andrew Sisters. They used to go a little club called Teen Town. And yes, they watched Gene Kelly's movies too.
