If true, then that's good news. This film could have been much better than what resulted. Poor Gene Kelly was shoved into this thing as a marketing gimmick.
The original was ill concieved as a revitalization of a genre through a family film. In retrospect it seems like it was meant as a made for TV film that was given a theatrical release. Too bad. It could have been so much more and garnished a bigger market share and been a memorable film had it been tied into something, and given the care it needed.
Will lightening strike twice and and give us another enduring classic of film-making art ?
Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...
If this were true, I'd be thrilled, but Please.....not with Alec Baldwin. Ugh.
shareI would love to see a remake. I don't think Alec Baldwin would be the right person to play Sonny.
shareBaldwin was mentioned as Danny (the Gene Kelly role), not Sonny, which actually seems a good fit.
Is this being considered as a movie version of the musical? Or a third, middle-ground kind of remake? Although the B'way show pointed out the film's flaws by poking fun, and attempted to correct other flaws, I'd like to see a serious attempt at a worthy rewrite of this story that actually makes sense and is still moving...
...but to keep the aspect everyone loves about XANADU, they HAVE to set it in the early 80s. A modern take would mean new, modern music, and I think much of what XANADU has going for it is that awesome soundtrack!
The war is not meant to be won... it is meant to be continuous.
I remember the film well and the terrific soundtrack. I hope they keep the original concept for a remake. I saw the Broadway comedy version, but the same charm was gone. I like the projected cast.
shareIt would probably be a film verison of the snarky Broadway show which apparently just ridiculed the movie non-stop. The Broadway musical got good reviews probably in part because it clearly had an anti-movie theme and a mocking edge but it was not a big success and closed earlier than expected and flopped on the road, suggesting there's not that big an audience for that sort of satire. I've heard the original cast album and it's horrible - I can see sending up the movies' plot and absurdities but they also camp it up and burlesque the wonderful songs from the film, especially that woman playing Kira who ruins every track with her mocking of Olivia's vocals and/or the lyrics, I'm not surprised the general public avoided it. If they would maybe play up the story for comedy and perform the songs naturally it might work very well.
shareWe saw a staged production of the comedy, and the young lady who played Kira had a very pretty voice. The entire cast were good singers, and the two evil sisters were very good actresses. One of the sisters was played by a guy who looked like Kurt Hummel. The comedy was pretty good but nothing like the original film!
shareI just watched this last night for the first time in a while and I think a remake of the movie tied in with the direction of the musical would be perfect. It would be a spoof and not really a legit big budget remake.
Kira....Kate Hudson( Im not a fan but I totally see her pulling this off)
Sonny....James Marsden(I thought Paul Rudd but Im not sure of his singing voice)
Danny....Steve Martin(perfect)
