The Watcher wasn't a human. I don't think it was him.

When Mrs Aylewood saves Jan from the pond and takes Jan back to her house she says (refering to what happened to Karen) 'I think shes still out there somewhere'. So when she goes into the woods in the night i think she is looking for Karen and I think she does the same thing every night.

It is such a creepy scene watching Mrs Aylewood disappear in to the fog... Love it!

YES!! She still thinks she's out there - that is why it shows her and that is why people think she's crazy. There are closeup pictures of Bette Davis with that black shawl carrying the lantern which have appeared on the cover of every release of the film. When I finally tracked down the script, I discovered what I have always believed - there WAS a short scene later on with Mrs. Aylwood in the woods, with her lantern, calling out for Karen!!! This would help clarify what Jan is seeing the first night through her window. The producer of the DVD does not remember seeing the scene at the premiere, but it would have been under a minute - so I'm sure it could have been there and he's forgotten. I'm positive it was filmed, since all the extended scenes in the alternate ending match word for word to the script I have, as well as an extended scene shown on Siskel & Ebert during the first run that is now edited. I love Bette Davis' spooky portrayal of Mrs. Aylwood and hope that I see this haunting scene someday.
