I've not read the book, but have heard the movie's better. The book is out of print as far as I know of, so good luck on finding it.

Other than an abrupt ending, the book is fantastic. I honestly hope they go back to it for a re-make one day.

I found it about 10 or so years ago somewhere. I was a little pre-teen then. I remember starting to read it but thinking it was dumb because it wasn't like the movie. Something about a tree as the portal instead of the spot in the church. Maybe I should go into the attic and find it...

First of all, I was probably 13 when I went to read it. Second, I never said it was the book's fault. But I was expecting the book to be similar to the movie.

The book is set in the US, and for whatever reason the film is set in England (although the Curtis family is American, David McCallum's British accent aside). John Hough, the director, is British and he also directed a British horror film "The Legend Of Hell House" several years before (he also directed the two Witch Mountain movies for Disney). Jan and Ellie are younger in the book - Jan is 15 and Ellie is 7, Mike's name is Mark in the book.
The book is superior to the film (although I still enjoy the movie) and explains the plot much better.
