Scary?
Are you kidding me?
This movie was scary because it was so DUMB. Bad plot, lousy acting and the story? What story? This was almost as pathetic as Flowers In The Attic. There were scenes that were filmed like an old Alfred Hitchcock movie but there were TOO DAMN MANY of those. So much so that by the end of the first hour, my fellow movie goers and I were laughing at them and shaking our heads.
This movie DID keep me awake that night. Because I kept having the same dream of taking a girl to see this movie and her dumping me for doing so.
Even Holly Lynn Johnson being the cutie that she was(And is) couldn't salvage this disaster.

Well, it is a Disney film. A horror film meant for kids and young teens. It's shot in the same style as a lot of horror films, but without all the blood and gore.

I felt I might've enjoyed this more if I watched it as a kid but I saw it for the first time today as an adult. Overall I thought it was kind of dull but I suppose that's probably because they had to dumb it down for kids. I think a movie for adults with the same basic plot could be kind of interesting. I'm not usually one for remakes but in this case it could turn out well. Though they probably couldn't find anyone better than Bette Davis.

Having grown up on this movie and loved it as a child, I'm totally biased, but I still think even as an adult that it's an effective horror movie. It is muted in terms of violence and adult content, but the novel it's based on was a young adult novel to begin with; even in spite of this, you still get all of the makings of a suspenseful horror movie, sans gratuitousness or excess. It's a stylish film, and is unusual and utterly bizarre in so many ways. Very creepy even to this day IMO.
