Question about Bud's job

There's something I wonder about every time I watch the movie and I wondered if anyone here knows the answer to this. When Bud is being interviewed by the plant manager, he tells Bud he's going to have to shave off his beard because of wearing a mask. What type of regulation would require this, and why?

I'm sure it's a regulation that's enforced by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA). They mandate the use of safety equipment on the job.

There's a legend round here, a killer buried but not dead.

John Travolta in a full beard is gross.

I'd like everybody's attention. Christmas is cancelled.

Basically his beard would keep a fresh air mask from fitting securely on his face.

So if he was working around dangerous chemicals and there wasn't a tight seal between his skin and the mask, it would compromise the effectiveness of the mask. So it would significantly increase his chances of actually breathing in the chemicals.

Like if his beard was a quarter inch thick.. that would leave a quarter inch gap between the mask itself and his face.

or think of it this way, imagine going swimming with a pair of goggles that didn't fit securely around your eyes. if there were any sort of gap, it would allow water to seep in.

I work in oil refineries/gas plants and they virtually all require contractors to be clean shaven in the event that someone might use an air respirator on site. It's an OSHA mandated rule.

Thanks for the explanation, swtdelt!

I'm sure it was an OSHA kinda requirement for that type of work. and when it comes to Refineries/factories, OSHA has more power than the police,FBI, CIA, NSA, congress, and White House combined.
