I cannot understand the low rating...

A 6.1? This makes no sense to me at all. Is it the greatest film ever made? No, but a 6.1? Not at all.

I think this movie works so well because it is SO believable. The acting is excellent and it's a film where you pretty much never have to suspend disbelief. It's so dismal in certain parts and so upsetting that it's flat out uncomfortable. Maybe that's why it has a low rating?

It wasn't me who was murdered, was it?

I was surprised to see it rated so low. It was a major hit when it came out. I haven't seen it in a while but I'm trying to watch it (on Netflix which is on-again off-again) and I am liking it just as much now as then. I have always thought Debra Winger is one of the best actresses out there and the rest of the cast is spot-on.

I saw it in 1980. I liked it but wished Travolta would have made the character a little more fun to watch like in GREASE.
I thought the movie was just a small hit and the soundtrack was blockbuster.

I have to agree that 6.1 is way too low for this great movie--always loved its plot, characters, and music. Period piece!

Cowboy chic was a big thing when this movie was made. I'm not sure whether the movie caused the rage or the other way around but bars like Gilley's and mechanical bulls were popular. It was not unlike what Saturday Night Fever did for disco as I recall.

Saw this movie for the first time recently. It was ok.

i loved the overall style, the music, the tone/mood, acting, the fashion (trying to replicate Sissy's look)...

maybe it was the plot that bothered me. Not sure what the climax of the film was. the bull riding contest? when the bad guy gets caught with the money? eh.

My favorite part was probably Debra Winger's performance.

I agree totally. I was too cool to see this film when it came out. I thought the fashion craze that it started laughable. Just saw it a few years ago and again tonight. The acting is really impressive from virtually every character. Very emotional film. In the end I think it gets a much lower rating than deserved simply because people from my era still think of it as an uncool movie to like.
