Gilley's

Every time I see this movie it takes me back to my youth. I was 15 and we had just moved to Houston(Sugar Land) when this movie came out. The Legal drinking age in Texas was 19 at the time and the first thing I did was go To Gilley's .My friends and I only went a few times because we lived out past the SW side of Houston in Sugar Land. I watch this movie and The Thief who came to Dinner just to see how much Houston has changed in the last 34 years....

P. S. I never did get the courage to ride that darn bull.

The thing I find funny about watching this movie is how much Pasadena has changed. It looks like it used to be really country/redneck back then. Nowadays Pasadena has a huge Hispanic demographic, so I wonder how long Gilleys would have survived if it hadn't burned down.

I was just in Pasadena last week working.. and i was shocked and couldnt believe that movie was made there..

Noway in hell Gilleys would have survived..

I went to school in Houston in '76-'77 then worked in Conroe for another year. Everyone knew about Gilley's. I never made it there but I went to other cw joints. The nearest I got to Gilley's was a Greek place on the ship channel.

In 1988, i took a greyhound to Houston to stay with some friends. While i was there, my friend drove us past Gilley's. It was closed at the time, because it was early morning. From what i hear, it closed down in 1989.
