Why is this so loved?

Watched this with my gf last night because this is one of her all time favorites and I just didn't get it. Bud was a monster and Sissy just seemed like a battered woman. Also they could have easily trimmed 20 to 30 minutes off of this thing you feel all 2 hours...

Back when this came out I was waaaaay too hip to appreciate this film. I refused to see it and laughed at the fad that arose from it. I finally saw it 5 years or so ago and again tonight. The story is sort of predictable but I have to say there was some really fine acting in it- especially for a film of that age. If you watch it again notice the facial expressions more. I'm not a Texan but I was forced to serve with a Texan unit in the military- thought the accents were all done well. That ain't easy. The soundtrack has become real
Americana. Gotta say it's really a compelling movie.

I'm from that area of Houston and musta drove by Gilleys a couple hundred times since it burned down, but I ain't never seen the movie till tonight.

Ya Bud is a monster, Sissy is a victim/ look at me do what men do stereo type... but in the 70s/ 80s, that's kinda the way men were. Sissy is suppose to be that cutting edge change that chicks were goin thru back then *women hear me roar crap* but I don't get it either. Its not a good movie.

Dig the music though if only for nostqlgia

Because it's awesome

That is amazing because how I see it, Sissy starts the problems by flirting. That was the start, then she goes and talks with the guy at Gilleys who just knocked her husband out. Sorry - just don't see it that way.

I thought Bud was really controlling and refused to let her do something as stupid as ride a bull... I'm from Dallas I grew up here and I had no real issue with the performances I just didn't find the story very compelling. I just didn't care what became of any of them...

I loved the movie the first time i saw it, when they first started renting video tapes of movies. Yeah, Sissy was a battered woman, but if she didn't lie to Bud and go to Gilley's to ride that god damn bull, she wouldn't have met Wes, and Bud wouldn't have thought she was cheating.

It's loved because of John Travolta,Gilly's and the whole country scene/music.

Also because it's the classic 2 young idiot kids who get married way too quick and make all of the stupid mistakes kids make in a marriage.

But at the end they get it right. Best line of the movie "no way - we're going home"

There is nothing good at the bar but alcohol, men & women. The 3 things that shouldn't mix for married couples. Nothing but trouble.

Love the ending.

Yeah! When he put that "Sissy" license plate back in the passenger side window I knew it was for forever -again.

First off because it is really cool.

Second is because there is a lot of truth in this movie.
I saw it when it came out in 1980 and have seen it probably 50 times since.

Bud is not a monster by any means, he is an A-Hole at times but so is a lot of guys in this world. That doesn't make it ok but it does make it real.

I have known people like these people in this movie so it makes its more real for someone like me. These people are flawed just like in real life.

The story is a simple and honest, the acting is great, the cast is perfect and the music is awesome.

I can see how it's kinda like "you had to be there" type movie. I was a kid when it came out and it was a huge hit and it brings back lots of memories for me. Had I not seen it back then, I can see how I might think it's pretty goofy. Although, Travolta's talent and ability to pull off iconic characters is rather noteworthy, I think.
