Bud Hitting Sissy

That scene pissed me off.

i understand where you're coming from, stacey. i think that a man should respect a woman especially if that woman is his wife. i'm a country boy, so being old-fashioned is no excuse. however, i think that bud changed at the end of the movie. he realized that he messed up by treating sissy like dirt. that's why he says " sorry clear back to the first time i hit you." i think that if we were to see a glimpse of the sequel, bud would have treated her like his uncle treated his aunt. :)

Hm, which time? he hits her a few times.

I've seen this movie when I was ten, so it was a long time ago. I was really shoked when Scott Glenn hit Debra Winger. But I can't remember the scene you are talking about, with Travolta slaping Winger. When was it ?

reply

Yeah, the domestic violence stuff in the movie is rather uncomfortable, especially the scene with Glenn :-/ I have always been surprised at the rating because of this (I know it's either PG or PG-13, but I am pretty sure it's PG).

Bud slaps her in the face at the diner/restaurant they always go to, very soon after he meets her. Then later on after they get in a fight over her riding the bull without his permission/her not telling him she was practicing riding it he smacks her around pretty good and throws her out of the trailer.

I don't think they were using PG-13 yet when the movie was released. It is rather funny how its not "ok" to show two people making love (including the beauty of the human body), but somehow it will "pass" when people are hurting each other and doing things that are truly wrong. Oh, well. Such is the hypocrisy of the "moral majority"

i don't think they changed much at all in the end of the film. i'm sure bud was sorry about what happened, but that doesn't mean he changed. look what happens when he see's sissy face. he get's pissed, and storms off looking for wes to kick his butt while sissy is screaming and pleading bud not to fight. very similar to what happens on the first fight between wes and bud. sissy pleads for bud not to fight. so not much has changed.

as for hitting women. i don't think it's right, but i also think she had it coming on some scenes. she knows that both wes and bud are hot heads, yet she pushes their button and set's them off still knowing she could get her butt kicked. but that's sissy for ya. she always wants the last word, and her mouth is always getting her in trouble.

It's part of the wonderful drama of these people. You wouldn't see that behavior in recent movies because there'd be too much protest by civil liberties groups and such.

Hell it was just a slap, no biggie, get over it..It was made a long time ago, when things were different than now..All this PC stuff stinks....Don't get involved between a husband, and a wife unless it looks like someone will get killed....Me, and my ex were getting into it at a burger parking lot, up came the cop, and guess what the ol lady jumped on him, and told him to mind his own business...

I couldn't agree more. Hitting women is wrong point blank. I remember some people were really upset with the fight scene in Live Free or Die Hard with Bruce Willis & Maggie Q, saying he shouldn't have hit her or so forth. As for the scene in question, Bud felt bad about afterwards and I think they decided to love each other at the end of the movie. Both of them were immature and weren't ready for that kind of relationship. Sissy did push Wes' buttons and it worse for her doing that than it was for her pushing Bud's buttons.

If I were a man and a woman was coming after me, i would grab her wrist and try to get her to drop the weapon...or maybe i'd push her back...but i wouldn't use excess force...In fact, as a woman, I don't want to hurt anybody and I dont want anybody hurting me!

That is true. I understand WHY he did it. She shouldn't have said what she did it was very immature. But so was lashing out at someone physically. I guess that was both their problem. Immaturity. I'm sure that they will/would grow out of it.

That's just called a "tune up" where I come from. Keeps her running right for another 5,000 miles.

Bud preferred boys over women. Oops, that's John Travolta, not Bud.

Well, she did pinch him hard.

Sean Connery explains it well.

When you give them the last word, and they take the last word, and continue to go on in a provocative manner... I don't know if this applies to this stupid movie I don't really care to watch.
I have known a few women that liked to be hit. That is different.

I know you are but what am I?

reply

What both Bud and Wes did was inexcusable. They both "hit" Cissy, by definition. However, specifically speaking, Bud slapped her, whereas Wes beat the piss out of her. So, maybe the "pack your things we're leaving" scene deserves more ire, no?
