Travolta acted like a big baby: slaps his soon-to-be wife because she pinched him hard, even though he brought that on himself, silly tantrums--even threw a burger at a waitress that lead to him getting his butt kicked after he threw a sucker punch at Glenn.
Then Came Bronson
recluse, so true. Typical young, full-of-himself guy. I nearly said "Texas guy" bit I think this pretty typical of young fellows. By the end of the movie, he had grown up alot, thank goodness. I also liked the touch of Pam doing something good, to get Sissy and Bud back together.

When this film first came out in the theaters, I was enamored with Bud, I thought he was one sexy cowboy and I would die if anyone like him looked my way. Tonight I saw it again and after 31 years of changing tastes, I realize he was one chauvenistic, insanely jealous, drunk, looking for a fight idiot that let pride rule his actions and lived to party. Albeit a gorgeous one. No wonder Sissy looked at somebody else. If I had a man like that, I'd tell him to suck an egg.

I remember in the mid-80's, Siskel and Ebert had an episode about what happened to the careers of top stars of recent years like John Travolta. They showed clips from Travolta's recent films like Stayin' Alive where his character was pretty repugnant.

sharePerhaps the director's whole purpose of making this movie was for it to be a knock on country life. It showed the stereotypes of cowboys, rednecks, or southern folk. You know what happens if you play a country music album backwards? get your wife back, your marriage back, your home back, etc. It didn't paint Bud to be a good guy, since he was a wifebeater, and a drunk, and it didn't paint Sissy to be a good gal, as she was a promiscuous woman, a liar, and a cheater. As stated before, Bob and Doreen were the best characters in the movie. Everyone else was foul in one way or another.
Country person here. First of all, this film isn't even a far cry to realistic country life. It takes more than just a cowboy hat and boots and a particular taste in music to make one a country person. I don't see this film as a knock on country life so much as it is a knock on bar life. At the time this movie was made, the country & western fad was pretty big, so that made an easy platform upon which to tell the story. But bar life is bar life no matter what clothes you wear or music you listen to.
What I've always perceived the underlying message of this story to be is that a life centered around going out in public to drinking establishments on a habitual basis usually isn't going to result in much of any good in the long run. As someone who spent a significant portion of their younger life doing such things, I can attest to that first hand. Alcohol makes people do and say things out of line with their character, and perceive things in ways that are completely false. Not being friendly enough to someone in a bar may make them think somehow that you want to kick their butt, whereas being friendly unto itself may make them think you want to end up in the same bed together. It may be fun to go out and kick your heels up every now and then, but doing it too much will make a mess out of your life one way or another. The movie even attests to this at the end, when Bud is offered a beer after the fight is over, and he says, "No, we're going home," and he and Sissy leave, presumably to patch things up and start living a cleaner life.
Just my opinion.
