there was a moment that he gave me gay vibes, when he told his friend if Jamie Lee Curtis's character dumps him (his friend). His friend would still have Doc. I'm in the middle of the movie and dont want to be spoiled so I avoided the other threads.
Don't forget the gender-bender surprise with Kenny as the magician's assistant disguised as a somewhat unconvincing woman.
One of my theories about the film is that it presents a fantasy of revenge that Alana (Jamie Lee) dreams to get back at the fraternity crew for involving her in the prank. Since Mitchy also played a role in setting up both Alana and Kenny she gets figured into the revenge for betraying Alana, who was supposed to be her best friend. So in Alana's revenge fantasy, Doc turns out to be queer and Mitchy gets her throat cut while seducing another one of the crew like a slut. Doc even reveals his nature by coming onto Alana's boyfriend, who was Doc's best friend and who also played a role in the prank.
I don't like the dream angle all that much honestly. But I do think imo Doc was intended to be gay. I just think since it was 1980 it was only hinted at and not explored. And who knows the filmmakers/actors probably had no idea themselves but it seemed like it was the writers intention.
The friend kind of does a little laugh because he thinks Doc is joking, but then Doc says "I mean it," really seriously so I think he may be gay. Although he did also seem really interested in Alana and appeared to be really jealous of the magician getting attention from her so maybe he is bisexual.
The other clue is his reaction to Mo not waking up after the sequence with the Magician. He's extremely hysterical over the fact that Mo may be dead, quite an atypical reaction.
Interesting theory; I have watched this film a handful of times since it began making the rounds on the cable channels after its initial theatrical release, and I have always thought there was something hidden about Doc's character. I even thought it was unusual the way Doc emphasized "You'll always have me" and "I mean it" but I've never thought of the possibility of Doc being gay until I saw your post. After re-watching the movie, there are subtle clues: Doc's "best buddy" relationship with Mo; Doc's passive-aggressive interactions with Alana; Doc's dismissive attitude of his relationship with Mitchy; and, of course, the way Doc, the epitome of the "frat jock" targets Kenny, the effeminate pledge, seems to be the typical closeted-gay-guy overcompensating. Wonder if this ambiguity was intentional on behalf of Spottiswoode and screenwriter Drake, or if this was an interpretation that Bochner part to the role?
Hard to say. I thought it was weird immediately once he said it. There was an awkward pause. I thought they'd come back to it eventually. He did try and get Mo caught cheating on Alana. That could tie into him being jealous. Who knows. It could have just been a bit of bad acting that they didn't think much of at the time. They probably didn't think we'd be chatting about it 33 years later on a message boards.
