I was born in '69 and had the chance to see Superman 2 in theaters back in '80. There was a fair amount of news coverage at the time over Richard Donner and his firing from the film. I can't remember, does anybody know if Richard saw S2 in '80 when the film was in cinemas? Does remember if in fact Dick saw S2 what he thought of the film? I'm sure it's been mentioned before, however my memory of 1980 isn't quite as sharp as it use to be!

Yes, he did see it, and he said many of the footage used in the Lester version was stuff he shot. For example, all of the scenes with Gene Hackman.

He said that he was shown the film at the time and that he only got about five minutes in, the eiffel tower scene, when he decided not to watch it further. He an Mank had a different idea for the opening and they decided to do their own thing so that was that as far as he was concerned.
