I think this is the only movie I've seen him smile in....

I was thinking to myself he other day, that I don't think I've ever seen Woody smile in his movies. Then in the secene in the begining when he's dancing with the showgirl he actually shows somewhat of a smile. Weird. I think that was the first time I've ever seen him smile.

You can't come in here, this is my mastabatorium!

Him smiling is the final image of Manhattan.

reply

Yes, but that smile at the end of Manhattan is very twisted. He's not smiling because he's a happy, but rather because of how terribly it all turned out. Sorta like, "geez, how did I mess this up?"

reply

The reason for that smile in Manhattan is up for debate.

His smile is in direct response to "You've got to have a little faith in people." It's the perfect, perfect Woody non-answer. For we know him so well by the end of the film words are simply superfluous. There's a bit of an ambiguous mystery as to what he *would* have said...but I think by then Woody's "complained out". He's looking for the perfect, witty retort...and there's none. But he's scanning, scanning....

Gotta love Woody's uber-nerd smile to Sylvester Stallone on the subway....

The smile in the showgirl scene is also very twisted. It's sarcastic actually, and goes along with him trying to fake his way through the performance. It's pretty odd that he smiles so rarely, I'm sure there're more occurances but its just weird that none seem to come to mind.
