Anyone know if you are permitted to swim in lake huron?

I am planning my return to Mack island and I never had a chance to swim the lake because the whether turned very cold, hopefully it will be a great whether to swim but first, does anyone know if anyone is allowed to swim in the lake?

reply

Sure, I've done it numerous times. I also walk the shore looking for Petoskey stones (our Michigan state stone), which is found only in that region.

reply

Great! Then this time when I go back I will swim in the lake.

There is no law against it, but most of the shoreline on Mackinac Island is very rocky, covered with sharp-edged gravel, so while you can swim, your feet will probably get very sore doing it.

There are a couple of small sandy beach areas but few and far between.

Thank you.

Lake Huron has over 3,800 miles of shoreline. Just about everytown is in a budget crunch; laying off law enforcement as a result. How did you think you would be prevented from swimming in Lake Huron?

reply

when you go swimming just wear tennis shoes,, problem solved no pain with stones hurting your feet, oh by the way its Very COOOLD!

reply

The lake looked very tempting for swimming.

In the summertime (June to mid-September), Lake Huron is usually pretty warm and comfortable for swimming. Lake Michigan (on the western side of the bridge) has some very nice sandy swimming beaches about 10 miles to the west along US-2.

It is Lake Superior, about 60 miles to the north of St. Ignace, which is absolutely freezing all year long.
