How did she figure out he was from the future?

Great movie! Loved it. So well directed. I get why the movie is a cult movie with romantics. I am a big Richard Matheson and Christopher Reeve fan, so finally seeing this movie was really cool. I don't know why it took me so long to check it out.

Like all good movies, it gets me to thinking about things.

After Richard vanished in a matter of seconds, Elise must've been emotionally fragile. If that happened to me, I would probably be in a mental hospital. Your sense of reality would've been distorted and you would be in fear that could happen to you. It is like the scene at the end of Drag Me to Hell.

My question: When did she figure out he was from the future? I may have missed something. Or did she just happen to read the paper and see that a guy who looks exactly like Richard was an upcoming playwright? Still, she could've thought he was reincarnated.

I also thought the way he vanished would somehow become something of an Urban Legend at that hotel. It might've even been foot-noted in the hotel's museum.

I think there were clues. One thing I think is that the Rhapsody piece he was humming to her in the boat and she commented on had not been written yet. There is a book called Memoirs of Elise (that can be hard to get) that follows Elise in the years after she lost Richard - it is well written and explains some things.

As far as him vanishing from the hotel - I would think as far as anyone knew he simply left. Perhaps Robinson even put out the word that he had paid him off to leave her alone. I think some of that is covered in that book, too.

Glad you enjoyed the film - in my mind it is a true gem.

Thanks for your astute observations and answers to my questions. Maybe one of these days I will stumble upon Memoirs of Elise at one of the book fairs I frequently attend. Being a big fan of Time Travel books, this might a good addition to my other books.

If you haven't read the award winning book Replay by Ken Grimwood, definately seek it out. It is in my top ten list of Time Travel books. In some odd way it reminded me of Somewhere in Time.

Give the book a real chance.

Wasn't his play at his graduation party or whatever the first scene was, not too fare from the hotel where she was staying and and died? Word must have gotten to her if it's such a small island?
Loved the movie, mostly for when they find each other again.
