Finally got my husband to watch this...

and not only did he HATE it and hate that his evening was wasted, I found myself really disliking it. Anyone else feel the same way?

I've never seen it, but my library has the blu-ray on order...should be getting it in about a week or so.

Just curious keenvj, what didn't you like about it?

reply

Have you seen it yet?

No, the status is still 'on order' There's four coming, and I'm number 7 in line (and 33 other holds!)

I see Amazon has it for $10.49 now, so I may just buy it.

So, I decided not to wait and rented the dvd. Expecting that I'd really have to try to like it, I'm surprised to say how effortlessly the movie pulled me in.

It's genuinely romantic without feeling at all manipulative or corny. Everything happens so naturally and with such sincerity that you can't help but be swept along by their romance. I think my favorite moment was Elise having her picture taken just as she notices Richard -- and we hear the photographer say 'Yes, that's it!' Their first kiss is also incredibly moving, and the transition from present day to 1912 was really well done and subtle.

Watching the Making of right now, and can't believe the film's budget was only $4m. It's so beautifully made, and the score by John Barry is one of his best: it's so sweeping and has real longing. I hate to say it, but someone who calls this a waste of time must not have a romantic bone in their body.

One of those great movies that I waited too long to see.

Glad you like it

I think you're confusing "subtle" with "overt". I rewatched it again this weekend...my oh-so-romantic wife fell asleep. Hahaha. I am a huge Rachmaninov fan as well as a, antiquophile. Have been since high school which is when I first watched it. I liked it a LOT back then. Thus time, I was slightly annoyed...maybe put off is more accurate...with the blatant, smack you in the face messaging. I, for one, am smart enough to realize that the picture being made of her during the play was the one from the present that hangs in the hall of history. I didn't need them to make it painfully obvious by superimposing the frame over the scene, as brief as it was. When a movie breaks the fourth wall just to tell the audience what is happening on screen, I find it distasteful. I don't want to think that I'm enjoying a film that dullards are also enjoying. I'd rather go on watching, thinking that maybe everyone didn't pick up on that like I did.

Thank you for expressing exactly how I feel about this movie.

Great commentary. You nailed it perfectly. Thank you. It's what I would say if I were as good with words.

reply

You're welcome! You too, dave.

By the way, I do own the blu-ray now. The a/v is so much better than the dvd.

Hmmm, I thought the DVD was just about perfect, but now I have a Blu-ray player, maybe I'll have to get that, too. Such a beautiful movie. I have to watch it every once in awhile just to experience the beauty of it.

Can you name other movies you and your husband have hated so I can download them and watch them?

Lol

Whhhhaaattt?? Then you really don't get the true message of the movie/story. Personally, it's one of my favorite movies of all time. It's my favorite love story. It was a low budget film, it didn't have CGI and special effects. It may seem unbelievable because of the time travel (which, who knows, may be possible some day!), but it's the love story that makes it for me. But I also happen to like time travel--that's just me though ;)

Why would you watch the movie, hate it, then come on here and ask a bunch of fans if they hated it too? ;)

reply

IMDB message boards aren't just for fans...

Sorry to ask again, keenvj -- what didn't you like about it? When I asked you a while back, I hadn't seen it. Now that I've watched it twice, I'm still curious.

reply

Oh I thought it was that you had liked it (perhaps for years) and hence "finally" got your husband to watch it with you. Guess not. Well, go watch your kill bill movies or whatever does it for you guys. We'll stick stick with the gem films over here.

So is it safe to assume you and your husband consider Bridesmaids, Transformers and True Blood movies cinematic masterpieces? I was going to recommend you two watch Citizen Kane and then remembered it requires thought.
