What was the most heartbreaking scene to you?

Although the scenes of Richard holding Elise's picture to his face, dropping the penny onto the floor, and trying to go back in time again were heartbreaking...mine was actually when he was walking outside near the picnic table with seagulls flying around and garbage everywhere. I've seen this movie many times, and this scene gets me every time.

The ending just about kills me every time. Just his expression, in that chair by the window...
The musical score is heartbreaking.

Yes I would choose that... the utter shock and hopelessness. I've seen it in real life when a child or a beloved spouse dies

It's not "sci-fi", it's SF!

At the end where we see Arthur and the doctor from Richard's point of view and Arthur wonders aloud, "I wonder what happened to him?"
And the audience knows that he's dying of a broken heart, but Arthur and the doctor have no idea what he just went through. It's so heartbreaking.
And of course as soon as we see Elise waiting for Richard in heaven with her arm extended, and that music. Beautiful.

Yes - the stark contrast between the hazy, immaculately kept past, and the harsh and trashy present. It's a nostalgia-buster for sure. And of course the given heartbreak of the seemingly irreversible distance now between them. And isn't he close to the split tree where they first met?

A very moving scene.

After he returns to the present, and every second until the very end when he's reunited with Elise in heaven. Sobbing.

When Richard gets up after sleeping on the wicker sofa he stretches; I couldn't help but think Christopher Reeve couldn't do that after his accident.

Why ain't you at the garden party you heathen?

The whole ending is great, it just shows you how Christopher Reeve was a good, sensitive actor...RIP and thanks for this beautifully made and moving movie.

Yes, the whole ending but hearing how deeply he was crying when he first was thrown back into the now. It is such a deep, sad cry. I cry instantly when I hear him. It breaks my heart. :(

Wait! Wait! Where are you going? I was gonna make Espresso!
