Did Jack not have enough play?

Nobody forced him to work, he had his own schedule, and it seems he had enough time for play (ironically he even plays with a ball).

So why did he complain "all work and no play"

And he was certainly not a dull boy!

There's an old writer's trick, if you start typing something, ANYTHING, then you might be able to get over writer's block. So it's possible that Jack started typing that phrase over and over again in the hopes that the writer's block would go away and real words would start flowing onto the pages, and then he kept at it as he went out of his gourd.

Or maybe he was just typing a random phrase, because the sound of the typewriter kept Wendy from bothering him.

I think the idea was that it was time for Jack to have some "fun" (killing his family) instead of the work (being a father, husband and author) that he was supposedly there to do.
